Awesome, I'm a bioinformatics phd student myself. Good to have you on board.
There is no maintainer currently designated for BioPython. You are
welcome to submit new ebuilds to me so I'll commit them. You can also
get direct access to the Science overlay by taking the ebuild quiz and
demonstrating your knowledge of ebuild writing. If you want it, that
path eventually leads to developer status. Let us know if you want to
start that process.
