Hello. 

 Indeed the VTK works, as it is a dependency for 
mayavi (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50464).

 The problem is that the VTK ebuild seems complex,
means it will not be just an afternoon hacking. 
 
 I will put it in my long term plans.
