For people who have CDROM driver issues or lack of a CDROM drive,
LiveUSB images would be nice a addition to 2008.0:

Gentoo Linux LiveUSB HOWTO
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/liveusb.xml

Unfortunately, some potential users are not in a position to follow the
instructions due to lack of access to a Gentoo root shell.

You don't need access to Gentoo. You can use any Linux, or even MacOS
or Windows, to remaster the image.

emerge -av sys-fs/dosfstools
emerge -av '>sys-boot/syslinux-3'

You can already create a FAT{16,32} filesystem in Windows.

I'm pretty sure there's a syslinux binary for Win32. What's the issue here?

What about newbies? Please make it easier to *at least* the boot part, after that there's the gentoo handbook ;). (Like many, I started learning most of the things that I know with the handbook, so I couldn't figure that liveusb@windows alone).

I believe it was OpenSolaris that had this well worked out. Their livecd had a small script that allowed to copy itself to a liveusb.

I started writing the script for gentoo some time ago, but had to stop.

Besides, environmentally speaking liveusb should be encouraged :p

If someone were to take the time to put together a batch
file/syslinux.exe combination for Windows and a bash script/syslinux
combination for Linux, I'd add them to the CD.

> Besides, environmentally speaking liveusb should be encouraged :p

Sure. Rather than release a LiveUSB image, I'd much prefer extend the
regular ISO to be dual-purpose.

I'll try to have the linux script by late February for the 2008.0 beta.

Actually, I found a script to convert a Ubuntu LiveCD into a LiveUSB;
maybe you could use it as a starting point. It's attached.

This sounds like a great idea. What about the minimal install CD though? Last
I checked the minimal install image wouldn't boot off a USB flash drive
unless you were using the 2006.0 image. I know liveUSB isn't "officially"
supported but if someone got the free time to get the minimal images to boot
from USB flash, I know it would make a lot of people happy.

This means they will become supported. One however could release a tar just for the liveusb but it just takes space in reps, and it's necessary to have a script in both solutions so..

I haven't tried myself, someone knows what's different with these cd's?

The problem was the same with both the minimal and the LiveCD. In 2006.1,
genkernel was using -t iso9660 to mount the "CD root". In 2007.0, vfat (or maybe
it was the NLS stuff) was built as a module in the kernel and that module wasn't
available in the initramfs. Neither of these should be the case for 2008.0.

I'd be happy to test the minimal ISO against our doc if I can get my hands on
the ISO in time :)
iirc, the mount -t iso9660 was fixed, but the vfat/nls modules were missing.

There will be the public Beta, but I can get you an ISO image as soon as
we have one ready for testing.

Nope. The modules were there. They needed to be built-in or genkernel
needed to be told to include them. It doesn't, by default.

It's in http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208499, everyone interested please test and post comments/patches there.

If I have the time I'll try and make it prettier since it'll be the first gentoo contact to new users :)

I'll try to have the linux script by late February for the 2008.0 beta.

Nice work. What do I test it with? Will it work with the 2007.0 release media?

It works with the releases that are compatible with http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/liveusb.xml, I think only 2006.1 is the exception (search this list).

Stop top posting, people! Argh!

The other exception is 2007.0. It was missing the nls modules in the initramfs
that the vfat module required. The modules were built with the kernel and are
available once the CD is fully booted, but that doesn't help with booting from
USB :)

2006.0 is the latest release that this should work with. I'll try to find my USB
stick later and give the script some testing.

This is not top posting... Do I have to explain why?...

It may not be an interesting question but it was a legitimate one and I used my patience to reply to it. I won't however use my patience to be criticized for doing free work and replying uninteresting questions for the good of the community (no offense John, everyone makes them)...

ps: besides install-x86-minimal-2007.0-r1 works for me.

Very nice script. It worked for me with the 700M amd64 2007.0 iso
name livecd-amd64-installer-2007.0.iso. Booted up without problem on
my Dell Inspiron 1720.
Assuming it's not a problem to add the 1.5M for syslinux on the
install cd, this would be a very nice feature to boast about on the
install disc.
