I believe that it is important for gentoo 2008.0 already come with unicode
utf8 enabled, since this is an encode widely used around the world, so the
distribution could reach a large number of characters simple and
standardized way.

Thanks

It is good idea, however before this could be done, there is necessity of
conversion of all manual pages from ISO formats into utf8.
I haven't thought about this since I moved into utf8.

In documents of gentoo http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/utf-8.xml is an excerpt
explaining how change man pages for the UTF-8 format.

"Man

Man pages are an integral part of any Linux machine. To ensure that any
unicode in your man pages render correctly, edit / etc / man.conf and
replace the line as shown below.

Code Listing 3.13: man.conf changes for Unicode support

(This is the old line)
NROFF / usr / bin / nroff-Tascii-c-mandoc
(Replace this with the one above)
NROFF / usr / bin / nroff-mandoc-c "

Yes, I know that. But there is only one small thing, this solution is not
working with national characters out of ISO-8859-1 codepage. In such case
there is necessity of conversion of manuals into utf8, and such solutions are
available in external overlays like arcon (not yet in portage).

I'm pretty sure that the unicode USE flag defaults to on in the new profiles. I
think that UNICODE=yes is also set in the default /etc/conf.d/rc (or is it
/etc/rc.conf?). There's not much more that we (releng) can do. Anything else has
to be "upstream".

We've had USE=unicode enabled since 2006.1, so we're good there.

This would need to be done by the package maintainers, not Release
Engineering. File a bug with the maintainers (and realize there's 3
days to get the patch accepted, in the tree, and stable, for it to make
it into 2008.0's release.)

Three days? Same for the liveusb script? What about the schedule in the homepage?

It's 3 days until the initial snapshot. That means that anything that requires a
change in the tree must be completed within 3 days.

The schedule says that the snapshot is in 2 days. Go read it again.

Ok I fount that there are bugs already filled for it. Generally there are 2
problems:
1. Groff is not able to format utf8 characters properly, there are bugs
No:121502, and 190288 for it,
2. Manual conversion to utf8, there are many bug reports filled for it, for
different national manuals, for example polish bug No 122271.

Right now, the bugs for manual conversion are held until groff problem will be
solved.
