Hi,

I am interested in resurrecting the 'seeds' project (
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/seeds/ ). I first heard from it when I
announced my stage 4 project (
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-610904-highlight-.html ).
It's is important to know that it is my intention to stay as close as
possible to the original stage 3. Every change will be documented.

I expect to build the first stage 4 this week and I really would like to
see these stage 4's to be used to get the seeds project started again.
How can we make this possible?

Regards,

Aniruddha

Hi,

You'd be very welcome to join the Seed Linux project, which will be
continuing the 'seeds' project downstream, so to speak.

    http://code.google.com/p/seed-linux/

In Subversion, you'll find a script that can build a fully-functioning
Xen VM from scratch from our overlay.

Hrm, I guess this means it's time for the project to come out of stealth mode :)

Best regards,
Stu

Hi Stuart,

Good to hear from you, I've been trying to contact you for a while now.
Have your read my stage 4 project proposal (
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-610904-highlight-.html )? What do
you think of it? Does it fit in with your seeds project? What happened
to Gentoo seeds? And why did you decide to move the project from Gentoo
to 'Google Code'?

Regards,

Aniruddha

Hi,

You've probably been trying to contact me via stuart@gentoo.org. I
left Gentoo in November 2006, which is why the Seeds project is no
longer hosted there.

I haven't read your stage 4 proposal. I shall go and do that now.

Best regards,
Stu

Hi,

I've taken a look at your stage 4 proposal. My initial impression is
that it's more a stage 3-and-a-half at the moment. It needs further
development to include all the missing detail. But it is the sort of
thing that Seed Linux is about, and so far I've been focusing on
servers (as that is where my interest lies) - so if you'd like to join
the project and lead the desktop development, let's talk some more :)

Best regards,
Stu

Guys, not to be a buzzkill, but this is offtopic for this list since it's not
related to Gentoo Release Engineering. Please take this conversation somewhere else.

Ok, no problem. Although I would like to hear what the Release
Engineering members think of resurrecting the seeds project :-) .

We (or at least I) really don't care, since Stuart didn't want to have anything
to do with Release Engineering the first time around. But, I have no intention
of bringing that old debate back up, again.

You guys are free to build whatever you want, but it will never be hosted and/or
endorsed by Gentoo unless we (be it Gentoo in general or releng specifically)
build it and have a say-so in how it's operated. This policy is nothing
"special" for seeds. The same applies to "random" CDs and other media built by
users.

Ok, what is the first step I should take if I want my stage 4 idea (
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-610904-highlight-.html ) to be
endorsed by Gentoo?

Become a developer and coordinate with Release Engineering.

The first step is likely to see what Gentoo already has planned.
Basically, we've been planning on doing something very similar to your
idea for some time now. There's not really anything new in your idea.
It is good, but it isn't anything new.

We're moving in that direction. We're just moving slowly so that we can
do it correctly and within the realm of what we're able to support with
our limited manpower.
