As you can probably guess, I'd definitely like to continue the DVD media

This is the list from the livecd-stage1 spec file for the current DVD.

What additional packages would we like to have on the LiveDVD? I have
no problem adding things like compiz, but they will *only* be usable for
people with cards supported entirely by open source drivers.
These are the packages from livecd-stage2, which rely on kernel sources
to compile.

One thing to remember is that we *only* allow packages that are marked
stable at the time of the snapshot to be included. This means that
suggestions made now will be added to the list, but may be commented (as
you see above) if they're not stable, or if they cause us too much
trouble during our release cycle. I also don't plan on adding things
that aren't usable directly from the CD. This means no ndiswrapper or
anything like it, since it doesn't function without drivers that we
cannot legally ship. If it doesn't work "out of the box" then we're not
going to be adding it.
I plan on adding stage3 tarballs to the DVD images, which increases
their minimally. Also, for 2006.1, we gathered all of the distfiles for
the entire release, including the LiveCD and LiveDVD images, to comply
with the GPL. These distfiles were for *everything* on the CD/DVD
images, not just the normal stuff from the Universal CDs. They amount
to 2.1GB. Should we include these also?
I'd also like to open up the floor for other suggestions. Now's your
chance to be heard if you want any say in what we might do for 2007.0's
release.
Thanks,

Hello, I think the Stage3 and (Vanilla )Kernel-Sources should be added,
that is good and necessary for networkless-installation via the shell.
So nobody is forced to use the installer's or the "vodoo-scripts".
The distfiles would be nice, but I think they are not important, if sb.
really want compile more than just the kernel, he/she would be use the
network to catch the current sources?
If I want compile a real personal system it would be the best why to use
the current sources, and not 4 mounth old sources?
Other question: Will the voodoo-scripts also avaible in the 2007 release
for the people how use the shell to install? Or will the vodoo-scripts
completly removed, because they are unnecessary on the DVD?
Goodbye

A networkless installation will only be achievable using the installer.
I've already told you this. There's no intentions on changing this.

And why you include stage3? Stage3 within a network based installation
is complet nonsens.

1. How big can the total get? How big is it now? Is it half full? 2/3? 3/4?
2. Is there any information about what *Gentoo* users, to be
distinguished from the overall Linux user base, do with their systems
that would guide the packages into "themes", such as science,
multimedia, network security, office, programming languages, web
applications/servers, etc.?
3. Could there be more than one, with "themed" DVDs like multimedia or
science only available for a nominal price from the store? Something
like RHEL -- the source is freely available on line as required by the
GPL and someone like CentOS could come along and remaster, but people
who wanted the convenience of downloading an ISO would pay, say, $10 or
$20 to support Gentoo.
In the absence of themes, I'd just say "more programming languages,
Rails and more Ruby stuff, more multimedia, more science, more network
tools, ..." That's what I use -- everything I have on my systems would
easily fit on a LiveDVD, but I could go ahead and build my own with
Catalyst.

I just had a thought ... one could, if one were so inclined, extract
some meaningful information about this by data mining the Bugzilla
database. People don't report bugs on stuff they don't use. :)

The idea of themes IMHO go against the basis of Gentoo, they take away the
ability to customize and have a system with exactly what you want on it, if
you want to create your own custom build go through the GUI installer and
save the settings for later use (I believe that I saw that option in there
when I tested it out) that way you can customize your install and not have
to worry about it again (in case you are rolling out a build for enterprise
use).
As far as the LiveDVD goes, just keep it light on RAM when the system is up
and running to allow more systems to use it.
My 2cents.

First, stage3 is the *only* supported installation, so it makes perfect
sense. Second, a stage3 tarball can be used via both the Installer (it
has a URI browser) *and* on the command line for network-based installs.
Finally, I don't answer to you. I've already explained on another list
to you that we are *not* interested in supporting *your* idea of what a
network-less installation should be, and have moved on to something we
consider better.
At this point, you have three choices.
#1. Accept it
#2. Build it yourself
#3. Go away
I honestly don't care which one you do, but the one that I will not
allow you to do is to try to force us to do something we do not wish to
do with our volunteer time.
Good day,

Well, if we had:
#1. The 2006.1 LiveDVD packages (as listed previously)
#2. a stage3 tarball
#3. *all* of the distfiles
We would be at ~3GB (give or take a couple hundred megabytes) of a 4.7GB
DVD. Since we offer the media over Bittorrent only, the disk space
isn't quite that vital as media stored on the community mirrors.
Remember that if we add distfiles, we have to add *all* the distfiles.
So any package recommendations must also take into account the amount of
sources needed to build it.

Well, I can tell you that the GRP set (and hence the LiveDVD) has
traditionally been designed as a "desktop" reference. We don't include
server packages. Now, as you can see, I wouldn't mind doing things like
adding an IDE or two, and other useful applications. Generally, think
of what you run on your desktop box, and see if we're currently shipping
it. Then, ask yourself "would other people use this if it were on the
DVD?" That's pretty much it.
For 2006.1, my primary goal with the LiveDVD was to restore the packages
that were removed from the LiveCD (think KDE) due to size.
With 2007.0, I am wanting to add functionality to that.

Nope. We don't have the time for it, for one. Second, Cafepress
doesn't sell *any* DVD media, meaning that unless we find a new vendor
capable of creating CD/DVD media on-the-fly, as well as t-shirts and
other schwag, we won't be selling a DVD set.

Please list *exact* packages. If I don't use this stuff, I'll never
know what you would consider. ;]
Remember that there are a few goals here.
#1. Provide packages for the Installer
#2. Provide packages people want
#3. Provide stuff to show off Gentoo

We don't have this sort of access to the database, nor the time to do
it. This is why we're asking now. We have enough trouble getting
things done due to our limited infrastructure staff. Asking them to
turn into data miners is probably a bit much.

It only uses as much RAM as you choose for it to use. It runs "fine" on
128MB of RAM. OK. It *functions* with that much RAM. Really, we're
not too interested in supporting low memory systems with the LiveDVD
media. We'll make sure it all runs on 256MB, but I won't make any
guarantees below that. Of course, if you choose fluxbox for your window
manager and only run console apps, it'll definitely use less memory than
if you run KDE and 40 Firefox instances. ;]
