I thought I pass a little bit of recently accquired knowldge onto this
list, and that is to make sure any machines release managers or arch
leads are using to compile stages with do not use tar-1.13.92* for
packaging the stages.

Whether this error I have will be reproducable on other arches is
unknown, but my experience taught me that busybox-01.00pre5 and 1.00pre6
will not unpack a stage built with this version.

/gentoo # tar x -f stage1-mips4-20040131.tar
tar: Couldnt remove old file: Is a directory
(same applies if the stageball is bzip2'ed and one passes -j to
busybox's tar).

Anyone got ideas on the causes of this?

When I checked the version on one of my Indys (which packaged up these
stageballs), it reported tar 1.13.92. Considering -r3 is the only
version in portage, this must have been this very version.

My x86 box (finally back online) has tar 1.13.25, and when I unpacked
the stages and re-packed them with 1.13.25, they worked fine on the
netboot (Which I'm testing and installing on a second Indy).

I already replaced them with the re-packaged versions off my x86 but I
just uploaded one of the original stage1's off my Indy.

http://dev.gentoo.org/~kumba/tmp/stage1-mips4-20040131.tar.bz2

The offending stage1 has this md5sum:

c37d214817666cf6d161112dcaf41caf stage1-mips4-20040131.tar.bz2

The working one:

d1d4e40e75fc0c87a2c4a6e4d3d822a5 stage1-mips4-20040131.tar.bz2

Yeah, they work fine with GNU Tar, but not with the tar built into
busybox-1.00pre5 and pre6. Sparc and mips netboots use busybox, and if
I'm not mistaken, the livecds use busybox as well, so this could be a
possible problem in those cases.
