Gustavo,

How big is this DVD? I doubt we'd be able to host it on our mirror
infrastructure due to its probable size.

One thought I had, might be to throw it up on the torrent server so
graciously provided by the Friends of Gentoo e.V.

Don't forget that the OSL is supposed to have some torrent solutions
setup for us, or in the process of it! :)

is about 4GB, but I can delete the whole stuff to allow the users to rebuild a
customized version, an most unlikly to be use stuffs
1)portage
2)Kernel Sources
3)RamDisk Sources
4)Documentation /usr/doc
5)Java Development (just leave the jre)
6)Extra kernels and drivers

after that, I guess 3GB

and wich more I can delete?, distfiles is not on the disc...

Whould be great.

here my specs about the Live Version this will be the readme.txt:
Details of the system

GENTOOLC (GENTOO LIVE by Compunauta)
----------------------------------------
This version of Gentoo Live is complete, you'll find the content of
the RAM disc, sources of kernels, used portage, except distfiles
my email is madgus@gmail.com or gustavo@compunauta.com
If you want more to read visit:
http://www.compunauta.com/forums/linux/instalarlinux/gentoo_live_en.html

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
--------------------
DVD Unit, or USBHD or IDEHDD or SATAHDD with at least 5GB of
free space (256+128 or more Recomended)

VIRTUAL MEMORY
--------------
Is neccessary for work better to have Virtual Memory, just in case you
don't have more than 392MB of RAM, for meet this, we need a Virtual
Memory Partition, if you have installed another version of Linux
it would be recognized and used automatically.

IF THERE IS NOT PARTITION FOR VIRTUAL MEMORY
--------------------------------------------
If you don't have this kind of partition, you can make a file
called vram.000 (3 zeros) that would be prepared for the boot
proccess to be used as a virtual memory file, the minimum recomended
is 128MB that should be searched if you don't have enough Swap Partition
this file should not be greather than 392MB
On Linux you can make it:
dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=128 of=/mnt/windows_c/vram.000

On windows we use the program zeros.exe included in (utiles folder)
see the picture utiles/gentool_vram.png
The name of the file needs to be "c:\vram." for example without (3 zeros,
but with a dot)

NOTE: THE PROGRAM MAKE THE 3 ZEROS IN TE NAME OF THE FILE, DON'T
      FORGET THE ENDING DOT.

HOW TO INSTALL THIS ISO ONTO A HARD DRIVE OR OTHER MEDIA
--------------------------------------------------------
We can install Gentoo Live just copying the iso file onto any root
place of any partition without partitioning our hard drive
just extract an ISO from the DVD or place the downloaded one
on whatever root place you have 4GB of free space.
This increases the speed of working 3 or 5 times than DVD
The file should be named "rootfs.iso", this file will be searched by
the small included ISO for writing onto a CD or CD-CARD
The file rootfs.iso can stay on any USB storage device like USB-TO-IDE
or CF, or MS, SM, xD, MC, or any USB PENDRIVE compatible.

>From Linux:
dd if=/dev/dvd bs=1M of=/rootfs.iso

>From Windows:
Use Nero with Image recorder and before to save, we choose the ISO type

NOTE: NERO USE A PROPIETARY FORMAT NRG, DOES NOT WORK FOR OUR PURPOSES
CHECK NERO TO SAVE AS IN ISO FORMAT

HELP:
-----
Try to write to my email:
Gustavo Guillermo
Gustavo Guillermo
And be patient or try the form inside the web page
http://www.compunauta.com/forums/linux/instalarlinux/gentoo_live_en.html

Mantaining the Packages
We can update, delete, install packages on our own ISO DVD, we mount the ISO
or DVD:
mount -o loop rootfs.iso /mnt
mkdir /mygentoo
cp -Rpv /mnt/rootfs /mygentoo
chroot /mygentoo/rootfs
mkdir /distfiles
emerge stuffs
...
...
After that we can rebuild the DVD, copy the whole content of the DVD
to /mygentoo/dvd/ less rootfs folder and we start to upgrade the new rootfs
mkdir /mygentoo/dvd
mkzftree -z 9 /mygentoo/rootfs /mygentoo/dvd/rootfs
If you wish to modify the ram disk is onto /mygentoo/dvd/boot_ram and for
upgrade them we excecute ./mkram inside /mygentoo/dvd use the ./superulinux
(review them) to generate our new ISO

Since it is not an official release, I'm not sure that we should be
hosting or endorsing it. If the Friends of Gentoo e.V. want to host it
on their tracker, that's fine with me, but I pretty much completely
object to it being called a "Gentoo Live DVD" as that will cause
confusion with our users since it is *not* a Gentoo LiveDVD (made by us)
and doesn't follow our release standards in any way. This will be even
more confusing when I release an official Gentoo LiveDVD. If it were my
decision, I would say that you would need to name it something else, and
find hosting for it. A good example of this is RR4/RR64, which is
"based on Gentoo" but doesn't use our name.

Hi Everybody
I could host the LiveDVD with no problem at all.
I have FB 100Mb/s in Tokyo but is share with some users and from the
next month I move direct to backbone connection with 100Mb/s.
Mean time I mirror Conrad, Kororaa and RR and I could host the Gentoo
LiveDVD too for Asia Pacific Region.
No traffic limit connection is on PPPOE in past 40 days on ppp0 i have
more then 5 Terra traffic and If I will get some more Terra in + i do
not mind ;).
If you Guys decide to make it I will keep on my ftp with pleaser.

As you can all already see, there is already confusion that this is a
"Gentoo LiveDVD" when it is not.

How is to be called, is the gentoo running on my hard drive (terminal server),
maded Live?

Ok, let me undestand, you said you need to do the Live DVD to be called a
Gentoo Live DVD, ok let me know how can I make it tested by you guys and
approved.

I have an idea, what happen if you check this first unofficial release, and
see how it works and you guys tell me how to proceed for 2006.0, I can remove
my logos about of course, and put only the stuff coming in an actual live CD
related to bootsplash, I was added a pretty gentoo theme gfxboot.

Should be any way to mantain an official release, I hope. Or you are so closed
about?

Marry Christmas.

Not "Gentoo" as you are not affiliated with Gentoo and it is not an
official project. Feel free to call it anything from "Gustavo's
Terminal Server LiveDVD" to "Funky Chicken". The point being that
"Gentoo" shouldn't be used.

The release standards means it must be created by a developer of Gentoo.
It must follow all of the release guidelines[1]. It must also be
something that we want to distribute.

Here is the way I see it. This is *your* project. *You* need to come
up with a *unique* name for it. It isn't an official Gentoo project,
and for it to become one, you would really need to join Gentoo as a
developer and join Release Engineering.

You have to follow through with the normal process of becoming a
developer. It also needs to be something that the Gentoo project is
willing to host on our infrastructure. Asking our volunteer mirrors to
host a 4GB DVD image that is essentially a special-use image isn't going
to fly. The only place it could really be hosted in on our bittorrent
tracker.

I have no desire to add a terminal server image to our release
materials. We are currently massively understaffed. Adding something
as an official project means we have to support it. With our current
staffing, we are looking to reduce the amount of release media to
support, not increase it.

While I appreciate your project, this is why I have suggested that you
instead host this yourself under a naming of your choosing that isn't
"Gentoo". There's nothing stopping you from building a project on
Gentoo. In fact, we encourage it. That doesn't mean that we have to
host it or even really acknowledge it.

We are not accepting new release materials at this time.

You are more than welcome to try making it an official project, which
means you need to first find a current Gentoo developer to mentor you,
so you can become a developer. You will then need to create the project
and publish it on Gentoo infrastructure. As I said, we simply don't
have the resources to host and support something so single-use at this
time.

No. It is not Gentoo. It is "based on Gentoo".

If it doesn't come from the Gentoo project, it isn't Gentoo. I hate to
make this distinction, but it is there and we need to protect our
trademark (the Gentoo name).

Who are you and why should we trust binaries supplied by you? Being
open does not mean accepting random binaries from any Tom, Dick or

You are right.
But the steps to make a LiveSystem can be stored onto a script with a list of
files to pick for ramdisk and 2 or 3 scripts to detect the other stuffs, then
if I supply that procedure, you can use your binaries not my ones.

And shure you should not trust on my binaries you don't know me, But I would
never put something harmless, I'm not crazy.

Anyway I'm asking on how to help on the official Gentoo Live DVD.

Have you seen the Gentoo x86 LiveCD? The one with the Gentoo Linux
Installer on it?

The official LiveDVD will be an eventual replacement for that CD, and
will simply contain more packages. There's not really anything to do to
help with it. It's essentially "done" insofar as it is structurally
identical to the LiveCD, just with more packages so it is not
constrained to a 700MB ISO.
