Hey guys,
In taking P. Diddy's phrase of "Vote or Die" I've taken it in the Gentoo
world to mean "respond or die." I need directory listings of your
release material so I can get a handle on how much space I need to alert
my admins to.
Basically an "ls -lRh" of your directory structure for the release would
be perfect.
That will be all gentlemen,
Jeffrey

First a short summary of what PPC is about to release.
Pieter will reply to this email with the correct sizes.
Stages:
stage1-ppc 12MB
stage2-g3 49MB
stage2-g4 49MB
stage2-g5 49MB
stage2-ppc 49MB
stage3-g3 94MB
stage3-g4 94MB
stage3-g5 94MB
stage3-ppc 94MB
portage-snap 12MB
LiveCDs:
Mini-Install-CD 100MB
Regular-Install-CD with stage1, all four stage3 and distfiles
600MB
Packages-CDs:
Generic PPC 600MB
Approximate release size: 2GB
Furthermore for Bittorrent:
G3-Packages-CD 600MB
G4-Packages-CD 600MB
G5-Packages-CD 600MB
Official supported machines:
- All NewWorld Apples (so everything from late 1999 on)
beside the brandnew iMac G5 due to kernel issues
- Genesi PegasosII
Probably working machines:
- iMac G5
- IBM RS/6000
- other PowerPC-based machines
Future plans:
Deluxe XLiveDVD with autostarting X, all stages, packages
and distfiles, probably with build-environment, distcc,
crossdev-utility and zeroconf. Probably something for
the shop, experimental or Bittorrent.
Regards, Lars
PS: CCing ppc-dev for transparent communication ;)

I'll follow up with a release changelog as soon as the last component
is online.

There is a release ChangeLog for 2004.3 at
gentoo/xml/htdocs/releng/release/2004.3/ChangeLog that is in
"echangelog" format. I have been using it to note closed bugs, which is
why I have not been adding arch-specific information. The plan is to
put all the bugs in there that we have resolved, then add the
arch-specific ChangeLog information that we want the users to see at the
top of the file. Essentially is would end up being an arch-by-arch
overview of the changes since 2004.2, then below a detailed list of all
the bugs closed.
Everybody should go check it out.
This doesn't mean we don't want you to do your changelog, quite the
contrary. An arch-specific ChangeLog is definitely encouraged for all
arches. I just wanted to remind everyone that we're planning on having
a *release* changelog which should show all changes across all arches
for this release.

Is there some way to reduce the duplication of effort here? We all know
that when the same information has to be duplicated in multiple places,
some will be out of sync. Take gentoo/misc/herds.xml. There's no way
that's up to date.

Well, if someone is doing a arch-specific ChangeLog, I was planning on
simply copying and pasting theirs into ours.

It seems simpler to just have them add it to the main changelog
themselves. That way, it will save you some work ;)
Cheers,
