Hello,

I talked to esammer yesterday about the possibility to have
something related to an installer in 2005.0. He said their
project got more active over the last weeks and so they are
now moving forward again. He also said, it would be a good idea
to have a meeting with releng to discuss what we should have
and what we can have (in case we put someting installer-related
on the livecd). Even if there is no X-Livecd for 2005.x, he
could offer a dialog (bash) based assistant.

I suggest a meeting between 1400 UTC and 1800 UTC.

That would be awesome. I also am going to try to come up with a nice
beta X CD very soon, so I can give the installer guys something to work
with.

Eric, do you guys have any plans for making some kind of "hdinstall"
type of script? If not, we can work with you to create one, allowing
someone to essentially dump the contents of our ISO onto their hard
drive, making for a *very* quick install.

Very cool. I think either way, we'll be able to provide something of use
to releng for 2005.0. Due to resources and time, we're currently
concentrating on x86 as that is the hardware that is readily available
and what most people in our neck of the Gentoo woods are accustomed to.
That is not to say that other archs such as ppc, sparc, etc. will not be
supported, only that we will get x86 on its feet and fill in the arch
specific details as resources become available.

This is a good idea. We had planned support for pointing at custom
stage3 tarballs in the profile (see our docs for additional info on
profiles etc.) which would fetch the stage if the URI is http(s):// or
copy if it's file:// which would perform something similar. Is that kind
of feature along the same lines as what you're thinking of? I'm not
super familiar with hdinstall, but I imagine it just writes the contents
of an ISO to disk.

Again, I want to thank the releng devs and you've been nothing but
supportive and helpful (especially wolf, beejay, and zhen). I've joined
the releng list so I can eavesdrop on the ideas that pop up here as
well. If anyone has ideas, comments, suggestions, etc. for installer
features or would like to help (nudge, nudge) feel free to email me,
join the gentoo-installer list or drop by #gentoo-installer.

Thanks again to all.

Great! I look forward to seeing what our projects can do.

Would it be OK if we moved the meeting to mid-next week? I am going to
be unavailable during the day this week (running Orientation for
incoming students) and I would like to attend this meeting.

Cheers,

I think x86 is probably where we will go first, though PPC already has
their KDE/Gnome LiveCD, so they may be able to provide some valuable
information and we might be able to get them both going simultaneously.
From what I've been able to tell, other than a few nuances, PPC isn't
too different from x86, installation-wise. We'll just see how much time
we end up having.

The idea of a hdinstall is it asks only a few questions (do you need to
partition? install on full drive? pick partition to install to, that
sort of stuff), then it proceeds to duplicate the CD onto the hard disk,
then setup the boot loader. It should be very easy to setup, and if
need be, we can always look at hdinstall-knoppix as a guideline.
