Thanks, but I won't run, because I plan on steering the QA ship and
don't want to start another "checks and balances" debate.

Thanks! Sorry I have to decline for now. Definitely interested, but I'd
be lying if I said I have time or energy for it in the following months.

Thank you very much for the nomination! However, my kids are still just
1.5 years old (I have twins), so I don't have enough time to be able to
accept for this year. Hopefully at a later election! When my kids were
born I didn't send pictures to the list, but better late than never...
Here they are when they were less than a month old and how they are now:

Thanks Aaron and Guilherme.

As for at least the next 4 months I wouldn't have much more time to
dedicate to the council, other than preparing for and participating in
the meetings, I'm going to have to decline for this round of elections.

Thank you for your trust but I'm going to decline. I'm spending way too
much time on Gentoo already, and I'd prefer dedicating my time to
technical work where we are in constant need of more people than to
politics where we seem to have more than enough candidates.

So people may or may not want or want not a manifesto.

Instead I offer you a "20 years of Gentoo" Codeswarm video:

http://gentooexperimental.org/~patrick/codeswarm2020.mp4
(x265, 1080p, CC BY-NC 4.0 )

Looking at that I'd say Gentoo, as a whole, is doing pretty ok.

Council hasn't had much to decide on the last months, and I think that's
a good thing.
Personally I've not had that much time, between personal issues and work
it's been unexpectedly exciting. And the time I have for gentoo things
mostly gets budgeted by others.
(I have a faint hope that this may change, but no guarantees ...)

I don't appreciate the deletionists who want to rip out everything
that's older than 6 weeks and not on Github, but that's their thing and
who am I to judge. It it were up to me we would spend more time on
making Gentoo boring so that we have time for the really interesting
things instead of trying to rewrite everything and have constant churn
and maximal entropy.

We haven't had a new EAPI in a while. I hope it stays that way, and we
might even reduce the amount of active EAPIs even more so that there's
fewer surprises (pop quiz: what's the difference between EAPI 3 and EAPI
4?).
Boring is good. Complexity is the enemy.

I have lots of opinions, so if you don't vote you increase the risk that
I get voted into the council again and you'll have to tolerate said
opinions. Every voter can do their contribution to influence the result,
so do the patriotic thing and vote.

Be excellent to each other,

Patrick

Are you saying you're against fixing bugs in the current EAPI and would
prefer ignoring the problems that have been identified so far?

Are you going to achieve that by committing more ebuilds using
deprecated EAPIs?

Have you stopped punching yourself?

Nice false dichotomy you've set up, let me instead talk about something
unrelated ...

Ah damn it must feel good to yell at people.

I know what you mean, you know what you mean, everyone else is most
likely confused.

... do you think this is a good use of time of the readers of this
mailinglist?

May I suggest that you keep your personal grievances to yourself and
possibly, maybe, not bother other people with it? But that's too much to
ask, and you REALLY like to attack me personally. (Like, I write two
emails and BAM there's a gorny trying to throw shade ... which is why
I've mostly abstained from mailinglists for a while. Too predictable and
no useful results)

So to get back to your first question, if there are useful changes then
of course we can discuss them. From my point of view that's fixing the
wrong things (the ebuild format in itself is ... hmm ... not very
optimal). And we've backdated changes into existing EAPIs, so if it's
"just" a bug the specification could be ammended and problem solve.

To get back to the issue of personal attacks, I don't particularly enjoy
your brand of negativity, and would appreciate it if you didn't spray it
around like a male cat. I doubt you'll even understand this, as you've
carefully managed to skip any criticism before.

Oh well, didn't have a proper flamewar in a while. Not going to have
one. Sad.

Be excellent to each other,

Patrick

Rest assured, those aren't just "personal grievances" of mgorny, lots of
people share them. Maybe time for some introspection on your part?

Y'know, it's kinda rude to jump into a discussion like that.

And now I know that it's two people who like to repeatedly state that
they don't like me (as if I didn't notice that the last, err, dozens of
times you repeated yourself). Doesn't make 'lots of people' yet.

... was this really worth sending to a mailinglist so that hundreds of
people have to read about how you feel?

(Come on, people, we used to have proper flamewars here, not just this
unmotivated whining ... I expect better!)

I'm not yelling.

I'm sorry that it wasn't clear, though I find your response really hard
to comprehend. I'm going to clarify what I meant.

You're running for a political position. As part of your agenda you're
indicating you'd like to see fewer EAPIs around. As you probably know,
there's quite a few developers that are actively working towards
removing old EAPIs, and I'm one of them. I just happen to know that
you've just committed an EAPI=5 ebuild last week, for no good reason.

So to me it seems that your actions contradict your promises. In other
words, in my opinion you're straight lying in your manifesto. I really
dislike this kind of attitude, so I consider it appropriate to point it
out publicly.

If you don't want your actions criticized publicly, I would suggest you
don't run for public positions. Council positions imply responsibility
in front of all developers. Including these you don't like. I also
feel like it also implies being able to behave professionally in face of
criticism but this doesn't seem to be a case for a long time now.

This doesn't follow logic. The claim of lying would mean Patrick
promised not to commit old EAPI-ebuilds or something. You're actively
making him look bad, for no good reason.

I'm trying to motivate people to vote.
The risk of getting elected is acceptable and should be enough of an
incentive to increase voter participation.

And you knowingly broke tests on a package for no reason.

So we can now spend hours talking past each others using colourful
metaphors for our naughty bits, but that doesn't solve any problem.

And your phrasing is dramatic - yes there's a minor dissonance between
my statements and one recent action. Calling that lying is a bit optimistic.

Anyway - I didn't have the motivation to spend even more time on
something that wasn't broken before, so I didn't test if the ebuild
works properly as EAPI7 (one of the reasons I want less EAPIs, there's
just enough small differences to make this a nontrivial exercise)

If other people budget my time they can't complain about the quality ...

One of the reasons I avoid the mailinglists is the guaranteed poo
flinging - you assume that people are like you, just slightly different,
so your conclusion is that everyone is acting maliciously.

Would be a bit more fun if you could consider the idea that people are
not like you.

Anyways,
may your day be as nice as you are,
have fun,
Patrick

Yes, they absolutely can. We have, as a community, agreed-upon
standards of quality. If /you/ don't agree with those, that's your
problem and QA is within its rights to remove your commit access.
