Hello folks,

It's now past 4th July 00:00:01 UTC, and the 2011 council elections
are hence closed. The final turnout was 108 votes out of 246 eligible
voters, i.e. 43.9%[1].

The results will be announced after infra harvests the votes and the
election officials ratify the ballots.

Thanks to all the voters for participating!

On behalf of the election officials,

Nirbheek Chauhan

1. If someone has ideas on how to increase the turnout, they are
invited to volunteer themselves to the cause :)

More time to vote and reminders to vote during elections may help (said
the noob).

I didn't get to see many campaigns none of them where convincing (sorry
guys no offense intended) add to that an extra busy week et voilà you
have a non voter :(

[election hat on]
When we send more reminders, people complain about the "election
spam". In previous years, Jorge has found that mild poking works well,
so we stick with that.
[election hat off]

Personally, I'm more than happy to send out one email every 48hrs for
two weeks if it gets more people to vote. However, that probably isn't
the case. I think we need some creative ideas :)

Speaking personally, I did notice a lack of motivation this time
around amongst the candidates. Few people really wrote a manifesto.
Hard to vote for or against someone when you don't know where they
stand on various issues, and what their plan of action is.

Indeed. At the moment it's bad enough here with local state politics
playing out. Where I live, we're due for another state election, and of
course, we're in the media hotseat as the contender for Queensland
Premier is gunning for the seat of Ashgrove.

I'd rather not see Gentoo's elections become the farcical fanfare of
local, state or federal government elections. :-)

Having more candidates than slots post manifestos for starters?

If everybody else voted like I did we'll be doing this all over again
in a few weeks anyway, so consider this a practice round... :)

Seriously though - while I don't like flamewars in general I think
that at least some level of engagement by candidates on the concept
that they're standing for election wouldn't hurt. Sure, we can all
grep past mailing list posts, but if you're going to run for council
you can do better than pretend that you care.

And a personal thanks to those who did engage a little.

Finally, I'm not a big fan of "doesn't matter who you vote for - just
get out and vote" type of campaigns. If you're not seriously going to
investigate the candidates and issues and spend some time voting
right, then just sit the election out. Adding noise to the signal
does not make for a better election.

Rich

nomination/voting periods (not just for council but for all such
things) should get added to the Gentoo calendar

While it's still my fault to miss the deadline, but as I'm usually
offline during weekends, it would have helped me to:
Either send the reminder before friday morning,
or have the voting period end after monday evening.

I suggest that a rule must exist to enforce the writing of manifestos
by the candidates, or else the candidate won't be able to participate
in the elections.

I can't talk for other voters, but I did look at the past actions of the
candidates which has been the main criterion for my voting decision.

If in doubt, I would have weighted the actions more than the words
anyway. So I am not at all sad about the lack of manifestos.

What information would you like to get from a manifesto?

if a candidate wants to put that out, that's their choice. but that's it.

Agreed. I'd almost never put a candidate without a manifesto above
reopen-nominations, but I don't see the need for a rule here -
especially since we do have the reopen system.

To avoid short replies to 5 different emails, regarding the issue of
actions speak louder than words, I wholeheartedly agree. However, I
still find manifestos useful, because they show that a candidate
actually has given some thought to the role and what they plan to do.
Not finding the time to write anything at all to me speaks about the
level of interest or time available to dedicate to the role.

Rich
