* [gentoo-project] Gentoo presence on Google+ pages?

Dear all,

now that Google+ will open to organizations, do you think that Gentoo
should have an account there?
With Twitter and Facebook, other individuals have already registered
accounts with the name "gentoo". So it might be good to act fast.

Best regards,
Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn

Yeah, why not? If you need a hand with it just ask.

Do we have any official account of those anyway? I really wouldn't mind
joining Gentoo's PR team and try handling them if that's not the case.

Please do register it, if only to use it later...

Go ahead and do it, and confirm that you will do so. It probably
makes sense for pr to manage it.

Sorry for this, but I just took it (minutes before seeing this thread), I hope
it is fine.
Now I need to find out how to give people permission to touch it.

Interesting, there seem to be more Gentoo pages now
https://plus.google.com/u/0/102533239052362718067

I created a Gentoo page too, the "Just a second, we're creating your
page" throbber has been spinning for several minutes.

Now how to get rid of it...

Didn't work for me either in Chrome (Windows) or Safari (Windows) either,
I did find it here though, https://plus.google.com/u/0/101184229781272153227

Got it. I also found a couple others. I'll have to weed out the

Maybe PR should try to offer links to the official accounts/facebook
pages/insert social network here so users don't get confused.

Why not put those little buttons on the home page and on the forums home
page too. Let that link to the "official" Gentoo pages. I think that
would work well since it would remove all confusion.

Great idea.

It seems that there is no limit on the number of pages which can be
named "Gentoo". So the fears I expressed in my original posting were
unfounded.

It seems that at this time, a3li's page has the highest number of
followers. So I guess we can use his page going forward.

To make "+gentoo" work in the Google search field, direct connect must
be enabled in the account. If I understand the description correctly,
there needs to be some link from the Gentoo website to the Google+ page.

I may be one of those followers. I will remove the ones that are not
official as soon as I figure out which is which. I just added all the
ones in the Gentoo results that seemed related.

I can't help but notice they are using the Gentoo "G" thingy tho. It
would be nice if only the official page used that.

Well, that at least is enforceable. Once PR figures out which one is the
real one the trustees can probably send a polite note to the rest
explaining the situation and asking for the logo to be removed. Use of the
logo as an identifying mark should be limited to official use.

Interesting, I +1'ed Theo's and also added it to my circles. Now it's
gone and I have automatically +1'ed the other Gentoo page, but it's
_not_ in my circles.

I bet google allows several organizations with the same name (like
several people with the same name -- as long as it's 'real').

Meh. See trademark guidelines regarding community projects and sites.

That page actually needs a bit of an overhaul - this has been
discussed in the Trustee meetings for a few months now. The current
policy works but isn't very flexible for things like community sites
and such and addressed trademark law but not copyright law (which
applies to the logo).

That guideline you pointed to does not give community sites any rights
to use the logo - only the name "Gentoo." Read it carefully.

The non-commercial use guidelines of the logo would apply (assuming
the use is indeed non-commercial). So, a clear statement that the
site is NOT part of the Gentoo project or under the control of the
Gentoo Foundation would be required.

Anybody with thoughts around the Gentoo logo is welcome to
comment/participate in the discussion. One policy that has been
contrasted with Gentoo's is Debian's - which has separate logos for
community vs official use, and also which has clear guidelines on when
you can put it on stuff like servers/media/etc.

The reality has been that we really haven't had many problems with
trademarks over the years and we're not exactly a litigious
organization. If a website were causing confusion and they really
were Gentoo supporters I imagine that they'd be cooperative.

In any case, the intent of my email wasn't really to suggest that we
go running around sending out complaints, but more the opposite - to
indicate that we shouldn't panic over the site-creation stampede since
we do have the ability to sort it all out.
