As much as I believe in the power of friendship (a great deal) being able to cooperate and do things easily is crucial for working together towards a common goal. The only complaint I might have is that in some cases the assets do not better the community. E.g. donated PowerPC instances. They're free; I contacted OSU, not knowing what else to do, and they offered the project a blank check. Maybe they can't be given out to everyone, and maybe it is true (it is) that I am not to be trusted with anything. But using GCC's POWER machines is rather difficult.
