Hi,

I don't if only I feel this way, but I think we have too many IRC
channels.  So a little clean up would be great:

 The ones that can go in my opinion (at least from this listing):
-hurd, -arm (already dead, -embeeded is the choice), -osx (not
available on Freenode anyway).  Because the -x86 channel only has about
20 permanent residents, I propose to join with amd64 (we are related!)
in a dev channel.

 What about removing -vim (nearly empty and too special), -vps (join
with -server?), -installer (deprecated project).  What more suggestions?

Would it be possible to set up redirects or something so that all 
localized channels are in the format #gentoo-<cc> - it would make life 
easier if people didn't have to double check the channel list every time 
they wanted to refer someone to a localized channel.

Then localized channel operators should move to #gentoo-<cc> since only 
#gentoo-* are under Gentoo controle on freenode network - #gentoo<whatever> 
is not.

I don't recall the exact details at the moment, but some of those
"special cases" like #gentoo.de and #gentoofr have a very *long* history
and trying to move them would probably cause much stir.
Also, don't forget that we have both country channels (#gentoo-br and
#gentoo-pt) and language channels (#gentoofr is about support in French
and isn't limited to France).

But if an automatic redirect is setup, it won't make any difference at
all, unless people are attached to the name of the channel itself.

I thought all the channels were language-specific and not necessarily
country-specific? (even if they were named country-wise purely for
grouping together common languages from a country)

People are attached to the name, indeed. But we can redirect
#gentoo-fr to #gentoofr.

 rane (as Freenode group contact) told me that those moves won't happen
because of several issues.

having started a thread on -project mailing list [1] about a revamping
of our channel list, some channels that are in our official listing can
be removed:

#gentoo-arm
There is a note saying "Go to #-embedded", a redirect would be great.
Please remove that channel from the official listing.

#gentoo-osx
Only Willikins is there, can go and remove from listing.

#gentoo-hurd
Plain dead.  Remove from listing.

#gentoo-vim
Residents are Willikins and 4 unique users the time I checked.  No real
need as demand is too low.  Remove from listing.

#gentoo-installer
Has Willikins and 3 unique users.  Deprecated project.  Remove from
listing.

#gentoo-eselect
With Willikins and 1 unique user (fox2mike).  No eselect project
members aboard and they have nothing against killing it off.  Remove
from listing.

#gentoo-pms
Not in official listing but has CIA-44 bot and Willikins.
