Hi !
The message is clear enough. You ought to be a member of the Gentoo
Community if you attempt to submit your registration as a member of the
Gentoo Foundation. What is a member of the Gentoo Community ? Is that
someone registered to the official Gentoo Forum ?
Perhaps my question sounds silly.

I don't officially speak for the Foundation, but the intent is that
Foundation membership is open to most developers, and to members of the
community who have generally made some kind of strong and consistent
contribution (without necessarily being an actual developer). That
doesn't necessarily require a forum account, but if you plan on applying
as a general member of the community you should probably be able to
explain to a trustee what you have done to contribute to Gentoo.
Foundation members who are not developers are completely new this year,
so there isn't a lot of precedent. However, if you're the sort of
person who has maybe contributed to some kind of gentoo-related project,
or helped out infrastructure by hosting mirrors, or have done a lot of
work over the years helping out people on mailing lists, or whatever I
imagine this is the sort of thing the trustees would be looking for.
Merely running gentoo probably wouldn't qualify. However, I don't want
to discourage anybody from applying if they feel they have something to
contribute.

Guy,
The Foundation bylaws http://xrl.us/oo447 state:-
<quote>
Section 4.3. Admission of Members
Full members are admitted by petitioning the trustees for membership,
providing verifiable evidence of their contribution to Gentoo.
Active Gentoo developers who are not members of the Foundation may
apply for membership. Any developer applying for membership in the
Foundation will become a member of the Foundation immediately after the
next Trustee meeting following the application unless an absolute
majority of the trustees (currently 3 out of 5) oppose membership for
the developer at this meeting.
Applicants who are not Gentoo develpers need to cite verifiable
evidence of contributing to Gentoo or to the stated aims of the Gentoo
Foundation Inc.
Examples of contributing include but are not limited to, arch testing,
bugzilla, Gentoo forums, working with existing developers.
Contribuitions will be verified. The decision of the trustees is final.
Monetary contributions will be discounted - Gentoo Foundation
membership cannot be bought.
</quote>
The Articles of Incorporation http://xrl.us/bebyw state:-
<quote>
4. Article III
Purpose
The Corporation is organized and at all times shall be operated, on a
non-profit basis exclusive far the advancement and education and
promotion of software development in an open environment.
</quote>
The critera are left deliberately vague to allow the trustees to decide
applications on a case by case basis.
