Hi mailing list,
I would like to reuse the top-left corner logo of
http://www.gentoo.org/images/wwwcontest/contest1_front.png
to be used for http://www.gentoowiki.de/ and possibly also
http://www.gentoo-stats.org/
I think of moving "linux" a bit to the left, and putting "wiki"
or "stats" behind if anyone wants to know.
(There is no finished product so i do not want to show it here.
If you guys need to know what i will do with it, please ask me in
freenode (nick is expose) so i can upload the latest preview.)
so long,
Daniel Herzog
(expose)

Hi Daniel
Reusing the Gentoo "G" logo requires Daniel Robbin's consent as he's
currently the owner of the "G" logo. In the not-so-far future, the Gentoo
Foundation will have the rights on the "G" logo and use the following
guidelines regarding it's use (work-in-progress):
http://dev.gentoo.org/~swift/name_logo.html
I've recently mailed the foundation board regarding the use of the logo
inside a bigger logo; I'm waiting for further replies regarding the subject.
You can track the discussion through

Aaron's logo is a modification of the G-logo with the trademarked "Gentoo"
name. Modified or not, it remains property of Daniel (well, Gentoo
Technologies, Inc.).
Even if you would "fight" this (hypothetically :) you should also need to
know that the copyright of all artwork and stuff that Aaron submitted has
been handed over to the Gentoo Foundation (this was one of the requirements
of the designs).

Hi Sven,
thanks. well, as i said, i'd like to use the logo done by Aaron Shi,
which can be seen at the top left of the
gentoo.org-redesign-contest-winner-screenshot :) It includes the G-logo,
but also some stuff done my Aaron, e.g. this eternal-symbol instead of
"oo" etc.
I am unsure how this changes the current situation, and wether this
makes your reply incomplete or not?
Mfg,
Daniel Herzog

So, when i understood correctly, the "owner" of the G-logo
and "Gentoo" etc is at the moment changing from D. Robbins
to the foundation.
Because of this there are some unclear points untill everything
got done, and discussed.
And thitherto i cannot do anything besides waiting.
Right? (I'm not best when i comes to legal stuff...)

Legally you should ask Daniel's permission or wait until it's transfered to
the Gentoo Foundation.
Informally, you could already start using the logo and have it adhere to
the guidelines drafted by the Gentoo Foundation.
Also, the use of our logo inside a modified logo for community, non-profit
use will also be allowed. A paragraph from a small discussion (that'll
probably make it in the draft guidelines):
"""
For the "other logo" option, it depends for me. If it is a group that is
clearly only about gentoo and non-profit, I wouldn't mind for the G to be
quite prominent (for example a G with around it something like "Gentoo User
Group The Netherlands").
"""
