Hi,

I received the following message a few days ago; I forwarded it to
pr@gentoo.org but received no answer, so I am sending it again on the mailing
list. Since it is in French and I have no idea whether someone in our PR team
understands French, I am also including a translation.

This might be an opportunity to further Gentoo's visibility, but I wonder if
it is realistic for us to write 36 pages of 2007.1 related material. Maybe we
can reuse some of our online documentation? I also wonder if the articles
have to be written in French, as the magazine has both English and French
versions. We probably want to know before asking the devs for articles.

I will let you PR-monkeys deal with this, but I might be interested in
contributing something, especially if the articles are in French. I suppose
you can mail Sonny Gaviola in English, but if you ever need a French-speaking
person, feel free to contact me. (I sent a mail to Sonny Gaviola telling him
I forwarded his request to our PR-team.)

Kind regards,

Olivier

Chris, is this something that anyone can start writing on at this point or
is it too early to write about the upcoming release? If someone could start
writing about the upcoming release, see 10-16 pages requested below, do you
have anyone who has the time to write?
Also, we don’t know when this is due; its not indicated in the email so we
could ask to see if this is an early request or an immediate request.

Hi ,

I exchanged a few mails with Sonny Gaviola, and here are the details:

- The Gentoo Linux 2007.1 edition would be for the French version of the Linux
Identity Magazine, so all articles would obviously be in French.

- They would like to coordinate the publication of their Gentoo Linux 2007.1
magazine edition with the release of Gentoo 2007.1. Ideally, the articles
would need to be ready three weeks before our release. However, it would also
be acceptable for the magazine to be published a few weeks after our release.

- The contents would need to be original and 2007.1 oriented.

I am interested in helping out (writing, translating, reviewing articles), and
would appreciate if the PR-team was involved. Also, those interested in
contributing would need to be informed of the planned release date to set up
deadlines for articles. Since December is around the corner, I also wonder if
there will be a 2007.1 at all. Without any release plan information
available, I am reluctant to commit myself further.

Kind regards,

Olivier

Did he tell you how much we would be paid to write this edition?

It honestly did not even cross my mind to ask, as I assumed that would be
volunteer work for promoting Gentoo. Now you mention it, however, it seems a
bit odd to make money selling a magazine whose articles were written by
volunteers... I am not familiar at all with how such things work. Anyone else
want to comment on that? I am certain someone from the PR team has seen a
similar situation before.

Thanks,

Olivier

I did a 3 page review for Linux Format a couple of years back and was
paid £250 for it. Not sure how many words were involved but plenty of
screenshots and links to documentation were there to fill it up :)

Probably took a good 8-10 hours work though, getting things "just
right" for a magazine to publish is time consuming.

...not gonna happen. For one, we don't *ever* have our release done 3
weeks before we ship it. We pretty much release it the second it's
completed.

There is no plan. There are no dates. Any dates we ever give out are
completely guesses and fairly arbitrary. We have not _ever_ met our
dates, published or not. I really wish people would understand that the
only date that can be accurate is the initial snapshot. Beyond that, it
is 100% up to the state of the tree and the number of security bugs that
arise during the release cycle. We're currently modifying the snapshot
due to the extremely large number of security bugs we've been getting.
As such, our snapshot is becoming quite stale compared to the tree.
We're working as hard as we can to get things done as fast as we can,
but we're unfortunately at the mercy of teh Intarnets and UPSTREAM. Our
current plans are to release as soon as we have something. However, if
that timeframe slips much more, we are likely dropping the release
entirely. This is because I am not going to have my guys slaving away
through the holidays and with the original snapshot being taken on
October 19th, a new snapshot would need to be made. In other words,
we'd have to start over. If we're starting over, we'd just wait a
couple months and start on 2008.0, instead.

I hope this helps give you an idea of the pressures we're under and
sheds some light on our inability to provide hard dates.

I did not say the release had to be ready three weeks prior to shipping it.
Only that the articles would have to be written three weeks before the
release shipped, if we had an estimated release date. Anyway, it does not
matter.

Unless someone disagrees, I think the best course of action would be to inform
Sonny that we would rather wait immediately after the next release (whether
2007.1 or 2008.0) before commiting ourselves. I will also make sure to ask
him how much we will be paid. (In the meanwhile, we can still plan and do a
bit of research.) I will mail him tomorrow unless there are new elements of
discussion by then.

Cheers (and good luck for the release, Chris),

Olivier
