Greetings all,
I am testing out PPC linux distros out for a local group. I have had a
very pleasant experience with Yellow Dog and am now about to embark down
the Gentoo road. Well looks like soons as I put the key in the ignition
I have already hit a brick wall.

The installation of Yellow Dog proceeded fairly smoothly. I was able to
install BootX, copy the Ram Disk and the VMLinux kernel onto my OS 9
partition and was off and running. Well obviously I have got BootX
installed now, but I can not seem to find the kernel I need to begin the
boot and install of Gentoo.

First off when I downloaded the LiveCD 2004.1 I don't even see a directory
where they would have included BootX. Not a major problem since I already
have it from YDL. When I look in the boot directory I see initrd.img.gz.
I assume that this is the RAM disk, I then see several files like G4,
G4-SMP. I assume these are the needed kernels, but where is G3? I am
trying to load this up on a Wallstreet Powerbook.

Any help would be appreciated,
Jason

You can use the G4 kernel to load a G3 Box. You want to use the
initrd.img.gz from the cd. Then you need to pass it the 'rw
init=/linuxrc cdroot' as options and make sure that the ramdisk size is
at least 32000.

That should load the Gentoo CD on a Old World Mac. Thats how I did it
at least. There is a currently pending bug (46534) for adding Old World
Mac boot instructions to the PPC Install Guide.

Eric,
I have tried all 3 of the options lines listed below. All wind up with
the same result. Penguin shows kin the upper left corner then the screen
goes blank and nothing seems to happen.

rw init=/linuxrc cdroot video=ofonly
rw init=/linuxrc cdroot video=atyfb:vmode:14
rw init=/linuxrc cdroot video=atyfb:vmode:14 looptype=gcloop

Any other ideas?

Jason
