First off, I'm running gentoo linux (kernel version 2.6) on a 900mhz
iBook, installed from a stage 3 2004.0 tarball. I installed alsa
according to the guide on gentoo.com, but devfs is not creating
/dev/mixer, and I can't figure out why. Any ideas? What files should I
post?
Thanks,
Meredith

Did you check if the modules get loaded? Some /dev/* files are added
only when the module is loaded. The sound related module is something
like dmacsound and maybe others. I'm not currently on my iBook so I
cannot check for exact things to do...

Hi,
I'm now on my iBook.
I added the following lines in my modules.conf:
alias /dev/dsp dmasound_pmac
alias /dev/mixer dmasound_pmac
These cause the module to be loaded whenever the device is referred.
Alternatively, they could be loaded at startup.
modules.conf is automatically generated with modutils read doc to know
how to do it.
Hope it helps,
David
