Hmmm ... I tried the kernel from your webpage, and it does indeed see
the
hard drive(and cddrive) on the SCSI bus according to the dmesg log, but
the live boot fails because the cloop driver has unresolved symbols
(kfree,
do_generic_file_read, highmem_start_page, blk_dev, blk_init_queue,
fsync_dev, kmap_high, printk, irq_stat, bksize_size,__cli plus others
that
scroll off screen)

Going with the default Gentoo-1.4 kernel (2.4.21-ppc-r2) and trying to
insmod
your mesh.o causes the system to lock up hard. Am I loading the wrong
module?
Wrong order?

Alternately, where are the cloop sources and where might I find a decent
howto for making .isos?

The scripts are on http://www.metadistribution.org/gentoo/ but are
being integrated (80% complete) into catalyst which is a multi-arch
stage/grp/livecd building tool that is supposed to become part of
gentoo userland. It will have extended documentation available.

Sorry to hear it is not working for you, sadly I have no real other
ideas than that, as I don't have my 8500 working atm to test. The
sources for the cloop and other bits aren't really public yet, we're
still in the process of re-writing our build system, but if you stop on
the irc channel, and ask lu_zero or darkspecter either one of them could
build or point you to a new build version that what you've got.

Sadly our oldworld support is pretty bad atm, hoping to fix that in the
near future if we can get more people to help out testing oldworld
configs for us.

What, me worry?

It took me a couple of days, but I built a kernel on a Wallstreet
powerbook,
which is of course an Old World machine with both IDE and SCSI
systems(!)

This kernel will boot the live CD and load the cloop module, and will
boot the
installed gentoo OS just fine, and it will even see the SCSI system.

guest $ dmesg | grep -i mesh
mesh: configured for synchronous 5 MB/s
mesh: performing initial bus reset...
scsi1 : MESH
guest $ cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices: none
guest $ cat /proc/scsi/mesh/1
The driver does not yet support the proc-fs

Unfortunately I don't have an external enclosure, nor the right
connector
for the powerbook right now, so I cannot test beyond that at the moment.
And of course there's still the open question of whether or not this
kernel
will boot an Old World machine that doesn't have any IDE systems in it
(ie
a desktop PowerMac x500). I'll post more info to the list as it becomes
available.

So to summarize for the list archives : Progress has been made toward
getting Gentoo 1.4 Live(ish) working on Old World PowerMacs. Huzzah!

Following up on my thread from earlier this year.

I have a 2.4.24 that boots an OldWorld (Wallstreet) powerbook and seems
to work
just fine as I've started to bootstrap up towards KDE.

I've taken that kernel and I've tried to build a working ISO for
installing gentoo 1.4
on OldWorld Macs that don't have IDE. The problem I've run into is
that building
the ISO fails due to the script (from
http://www.metadistribution.org/gentoo/)
trying to build a 2.6.x kernel.

How do I convince the scripts to use the 2.4.24 kernel instead?

I'm fairly versed in Linux/PPC, but am a Gentoo newbie.

Here's the config I am using for a 2.2.24 vanilla-sources kernel on a
Wallstreet
Powerbook. (Upgraded with a G4)

Notes:

ALTIVEC is turned on, but according to the kernel Docs, this has no
effect
other than increasing the kernel size for non-altivec ppcs.

Both IDE and SCSI work with this config, but I have not tried it on a
purely
SCSI system (like a x500 PowerMac)

Cards in the PCMCIA slots get power but are otherwise untested by me.

Both BootX and miBoot work for me. I have not tried quik.

Sleep ought to work. (It does on a YellowDog install with a 2.4.23
based
kernel with a very similar config).

[Also based on a YDL install] IPTABLES work fine installed into the
kernel.

If you roll your own, make sure ADB raw keycodes are _off_, Enhanced
RTC is
_off_ and Support for /def/rtc is _on_. [As per the Gentto Install
instructions
off of the main Gentoo page]

The latest in the Gentoo-on-my-Wallstreet saga:

KDE is built (woohoo!), but I'm having trouble configuring X.
xf86config and Xautoconfig
ask very ix86-ish questions about mice and CRT-related questions about
scan
frequencies and such.

Is there an X configure program for PPC in gentoo?

Ok then, I'll bite ...

Is my Wallstreet trackpad a "BusMouse?" or a "IMPS/2?" (That's what
Xautoconfig4 asks)

On the other hand, xf86config gives me a choice of a dozen types of
PS/2 mice or "Auto,"
then asks me where my mouse device is (I _know_ it's not a serial
mouse, so is it /dev/adb?)

Where did I go wrong?

You would better try "Xeasyconf" or "X -configure" to create a
XF86Config file.
