Hi,

I looked through my list of installed ebuilds that are
marked ~ppc but work on my system. I would like to discuss
which of them we should mark ppc for the new Gentoo-Version.

Hi Pylon,

Shouldn't the current x86 keyword be taken into consideration? I mean, can a
ppc ebuild be 'stable' when it's still unstable on x86 (apart from the stuff
wich is -x86 of course, like xeasyconf and pmud)?

Or will this be communicated to the x86-team.. like: "hey, perl-5.8.0-r10
works fine on ppc, you might consider making it 'x86' ", because I haven't
seen any ebuild wich is marked 'x86' and '~ppc' at the same time.

In my experience, if it builds on ppc and it's stable on x86, why shouldn't it
be stable on ppc? The only times I had ebuilds fail is when it contains
x86-only asm-code, in which case it should be marked '-ppc' anyway.

Any thoughts?

Greetings,

Stephan van Maris

versions newer than yours, and aren't included.
(like ORBit, gvim, vim, sed)

One important problem I have is with imagemagick,
regardless the version. Reported as bug #17873
(media-gfx/imagemagick-5.5.5.3 relocation errors)

The new baselayout gave me some surprise, as it forces
linux keymapping. But I'm probably the only one who would
notice.

The GIMP-1.3, well, crashes at times. I wouldn't give it a stable
keyword. But it's very nice eye candy.

Nautilus, transcode: may be installed, but can't tell much, haven't
used them by now.

Cheers,
n.

i use the gnome-2.2 (including gst, etc) and vim stuff (including gvim)
daily. i'm against moving mozilla-1.3 to stable as it crashes a lot on
my box.

Oops, replied to you off list by mistake. I'll assume you don't mind
your reply on the list.

Actually, zinf is a strange one. It's the only way I know of
to download complete albums from emusic.com, and that part of it
works. So I wouldn't put it -ppc.

I guess I like the idea of marking anything that builds
and at least starts up as ~ppc. Not sure how others feel.

Hi Stephan,

Yes it could.

There are a lot of ebuilds, which are marked x86 but ~ppc,
and some that are ~x86 but ppc (e.g. XFree-4.3.0 as the
most important one). If you go through the ebuilds you will
also find some, that are marked stable on other
architectures (like sparc) but not for x86.

Latest is to say, that there are also some ebuilds where
other people decide, when it should be stable (like the
baselayout or portage).

Regards, Lars

I imagine that the relatively limited number of video cards used on a
mac vs. x86 is the reason for this. I mean, there's really only 2
players in this market...ATI and nVidia. The later being more
troublesome due to lack of documentation from nVidia themselves.

...and now I'm just blabbering.

r.
