Hi all,

I have Gentoo linux running on alpha. I would like to update the system.
When I do "emerge system -p" I get a list of the packages to merge:

>>>These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating system dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] <dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r6 (from pkg
dev-lang/perl-5.8.3)
[ebuild N ] app-crypt/hashalot-0.2.0
...
...

The first package is the one that gives problem. When I try to update it
"emerge ExtUtils-MakeMaker -p" I get:

>>>These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] <dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r6 (from pkg
dev-lang/perl-5.8.3)
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/libperl-5.8.3 [5.8.0]
...
...

The same issue again. I cannot remove it either, "emerge unmerge
ExtUtils-MakeMaker -p" gives me:

>>>These are the packages that I would unmerge:

dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker
   selected: 6.05-r5
  protected: none
    omitted: none

>>>'Selected' packages are slated for removal. 'Protected' and 'omitted'
>>>packages will not be removed.

I tried upgrading/removing/reinstalling Perl and Perl-dev. I always get
blocked on that particular ExtUtils-MakeMaker package.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards
Sam

Doh!

You are right, due to all the errors I had, I always used the -p option to
test it and to avoid emerges operations crashing. I tried dozens of times
always ending in emerge failing which I don't like since I would think it
leaves some mess after running then. The -p option also gives some info in
red, but it is not an error message like the "blocks" message (also in
red)...

While I was quite proud of myself after installing Gentoo on alpha, now I
feel like a total idiot :-s

Thanks for the quick reply, I am able to continue my Gentoo journey!

Kind regards
Sam
