This is a general call for developers to join the portage development
team.
aka: Recruiting Drive
If you have some "Good" python and/or bash skills and want/need to or
already know portage's internals. WE NEED YOU!
We have several non-developer contributors helping out, but it will be
very hard to match the productivity Zac has made over these past years.
For those that don't already know, I've pushed out a new release today.
Portage-2.2.8 has made it to the tree with many bug fixes. Many of
which were fixed by contributors Sebastian Luther, Arfrever Frehtes
Taifersar Arahesis and Alexander Berntsen. A big "Thank You" to them for
helping to fill the gap.
There are still more bugs to work on. More to pin down their cause, so
please help where you can.
It seems for the immediate interim, I have somehow become temporary
lead. While I have too many projects on the go to get deep into portage
coding work at the moment. I will do what I can. For those that can
fix some things, please send patch submittals to the gentoo-portage-dev
mail list. There are several of us capable of reviewing the submissions
and when ready, merging them.
Once we get an indication that new volunteers are no longer coming
forward to join. We will elect a new lead.
Those interested in joining, please subscribe to the gentoo-portage-dev
list and send an email stating what you can offer and any ideas you have
to improve portage's code base.

Hi everyone,
I saw the email sent to the dev mailing list asking for help on portage.
I'm not sure how much interest the post has generated, but if help is
still needed, I'd be more than willing to help out. I have good
familiarity with bash and python (I use both extensively at work). I'm
not too familiar with portage's internals but willing to learn.
If help is still needed, is there any documentation for starting
development or any good pointers for me to get started?
Regards,
Pavel

Welcome. There have been several so far, but, the more the better.
It will take the load off any one individual. We all (well, most) have
real lives that we also need to attend to. ;)
For best the best documentation, enable the epydoc use flag and
re-emerge portage.
There are several bugs to start working on. Also there are some gleps
that need to be attended to. See the email Sebastian has sent out with
a number of open bugs.
I will be laying out a plan for the sync operations change I am
proposing to do. If we can come to an agreement on that, then there
will also be that to implement.
So for now, join, start delving into the code, see what you can do.
Ask questions...
We will need to establish some meetings after some newcomers have had a
bit of time to see what needs doing. We can start making some decisions
then.
Thank you.

Thanks! I will get myself familiar with the code base and then start
hacking on the list of issues Sebastian has sent out.

Hi Brian,
I'm somewhat familiar with portage code, and want to help a bit too.
My main target would be to integrate distpatch (distfile delta
support, a.k.a. my work on gsoc 2011) with portage. I sent the patch
to the list years ago, but it never got any reviews, etc. I'm going to
rewrite it and add some tests, etc.
Can I join the team? :)
Thanks!

Sure. With more people, it will be less demanding on each of us.
I know myself I've only spent maybe half an hour in the code so far, and
still haven't finished it. The rest of the time I've spent in getting
established as lead. Also with more people being familiar with the
code, team decisions will help keep bad ideas from creeping in, etc..
Can you give us the link to any code you have (with g.o.g.o down) and a
brief summary of how it works please. The we can start to have a look
at it. Possibly come up with some better (if possible) ideas on
integrating it.
P.S. add yourself to the project wiki page as a member.

I'm currently rewriting the patch. It does not seems to work with
current master. Will send to the list asap.
General description of the feature is here:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/infrastructure/distpatch/
I'll migrate this page to the wiki soon.
