It's used to keep track of installation order. It's not really
relevant for anything unless you happen to have AUTOCLEAN=no set in
make.conf (see /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example). In this
case, it's needed for emerge --clean to know which package was most
recently installed within a given SLOT.
