Is there a possibility to rebuild the /etc directory, if it's heaviliy
misconfigured?
Just something which will provide the default values (or, better create
something etc-update can handle)

what about putting your /etc dir into a subversion repository?
though, you can revert to any state at any time.
and in case of fs corruption, just re-checkout the last state,
assuming, that you've backed it into a different partition;

Instead of etc-update you can use dispatch-conf and activate rcs. This way you
can rollback all (or some) changes you have made to the conf-files.
BTW; this question is gentoo-user material.

OK, this is an option, if the dispatch-conf was properly configured. Here it
was not configured.
So there is no way to reconfigure etc, if the user hasn?t set something for
himself at the beginning of the installation.

I asked in the german gentoo mailing list before here.
This topic should be in the install manual, not in the advanced portage
manual.
Or a basic backup system should be created without user-interaction.
