Hi guys,

The Portage project page has been updated, and now contains:

an updated timeline
a portage roadmap/TODO list from carpaski
an initial draft of the portage-ng design doc I posted

You can view this stuff at:

http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/portage-ng/systemspec.xml

I will be incorporating improvements suggested by Lisa, Andrew, Philippe
and Jason as I find another block of time to work on the systemspec doc.

Regards,

Daniel

the link "/var/db/pkg improvements":
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/roadmap-vardb.xml
produces a 404 error ! :(

Yeah, those are carpaski's. I don't think he's added those pages to cvs
yet.

Just a last comment :
- I'd love to have a --verbose option in emerge (maybe I should post to
gentoo-desktop-research@gentoo.org instead ?).

Like during the kernel 2.6 compilation, I don't need to have all the compile
lines. A progress bar would be better and the last few lines in case of
compile error.

Following the "plugin" or component architecture, this would probably fall
under an output component, I'd love to see different CLI and GUI interfaces
easily facilitated by the componentized design. These interfaces could be
alternatives to "emerge" and support options such as --verbose.

There is an issue of the progress of package compilation is estimated.

More I read about portage-ng, more I'm convinced that twisted should be used
(as i said in a post a few days ago). I worked on a project for 6 months
based on twisted framework (an asynchronous expert system, using data flows
from database and fuzzy logic). I can open the source.

That's just an idea. I will be on hollidays next week, I will have time to
create a prototype showing twisted in a portage-ng-like tool. Just tell me if
you are interrested to see a running demo !

I haven't looked at twisted, but a good solution suggested by nerdboy is
to have a design competition once we have the requirements finalized.

Daniel
