Hi all,
I've repeatedly been contacted by devs who are unhappy with the
abbreviation "PMS" because of the results that show up in search
engines [1]. I've also seen that it was ridiculed.
So, what would you think about renaming to "Gentoo EAPI
Specification"? Project, repository, mailing list etc. could be
renamed to "eapi" (lower case or all caps, as appropriate).
The new name would also match the first paragraph of the introduction
(quoted below) and it would clarify that certain aspects of the
package manager, like the VDB format that came up recently, do not
necessarily fall within the scope of the document.
| This document aims to fully describe the format of an ebuild
| repository and the ebuilds therein, as well as certain aspects of
| package manager behaviour required to support such a repository.

This name collision is unfortunate but if you google for "gentoo pms" or
variations, you do get the correct hits. So, are we changing it just to
refine searches?

Searching for "gentoo" gets me information on penguins and a property
company. I seriously doubt that Gentoo developers have any difficulties
using a search engine properly.

For me, the name sounds a bit like someone wanted to make a joke
and it ended up as one of the poor jokes which only result in
meaningful silence. I'm not saying that was the original intent but
that's what you can think of.
I think that a professional project should simply avoid such
'ambiguous' abbreviations. Much like we don't want naming something
'ASS' or 'NAZI'.

LGTM.
