Applied these two, thanks.

I don't think this one's a good idea. "Ill defined" makes sense and
describes what we're after; "volatile defined" does neither.

"ill defined" sounds not nice(TM) to me, so I still vote for a
different wording, not for the intention. "volatile" seemed suitable
to me but I may be convinced to a different vocabulary.

How about "indeterminate"? Or pick another synonym from this list:

I went with indeterminate.

Please revert that. Your change is at best grammatically questionable,
and it means something entirely different to "ill-defined".
You still haven't convinced me that there's anything in any way hostile
about the original wording, anyway:
ill-defined adj. Not defined clearly or distinctly: an ill-defined
concept; an ill-defined view across the foggy moor.
All that implies is that "what Portage does" is not defined clearly or
distinctly, which is exactly the case.

I've reverted this. Your change was grammatically incorrect and wasn't
what had been discussed on this list, and you've still not explained
why 'ill-defined' is in any way hostile.

This seems to be a cultural misunderstanding. In my ears (and ulm's
initially, we have the same mother tongue) "ill-defined" sounds hostile,
though it seems, that this is not true for native speakers of English.

In English, "ill-defined" is not at all hostile. I'd say it was the
opposite of "well defined", but "well defined" is a mathematical term
and is specialized.
