Just in case nobody noticed this weekend ;)
Perl 5.8.8 RC1 is in portage. It is currently package masked, so either
update /etc/portage/package.unmask or manually tweak
$PORTDIR/profiles/package.mask, whatever floats your boat. It is my
intention (yea, for what good that does :) to leave the RC's in package
mask, mostly because they're intended for people to test out and offer
feedback on the maintenance release prior to it being marked stable (so
I don't want people putting this into production, for instance).
Here are some things I know are broken:
* PDL won't build. I think this is an EU::MM bug and have a patch
submitted to mschwern for feedback.
* SVN won't build. This is actually due to a swig bug and is fixed
upstream (RC2 hopefully)
* wxperl doesn't build. Not sure why, haven't had time to trace the c
errors, could be related to above, could be something completely
different.
These were the only problems I ran into after working on 350+ packages
this weekend, so I guess all in all not a bad take (also worked a bit on
perl-cleaner to get more accurate rebuilds). You know where to find me
if you have complaints,

Wow - 350+ packages - a busy weekend.
One question: can you tell me in general what 'perl-cleaner' does?

At its lamest, perl-cleaner can go through and re-emerge modules
installed under old perl's for you; it can re-emerge packages that
linked against your old libperl.so; it can redo/clean your .ph files (if
you need them, you know what they are, if not, most likely not); it can
run on your computer for the better part of a day depening on the number
of packages and scope of the rebuild ;)
