Dear all,

all Gentoo projects are supposed to elect leads yearly and we have not
done so in a while (if ever). On top of that I am not as active as I
used to be these days. I've spoken to pchrist and more briefly ulm about
the situation and would like to propose that Panagiotis take over my
role as lead as he is the most senior active willing developer it seems.
So unless anyone else cares to nominate themselves within two weeks,
Panagiotis will take over the leadership and responsibility of defending
our project's interest in the greater whole that is Gentoo.

Perhaps now is also a good time to do a roll-call/status update of what
people are working on in the various subprojects (CL, scheme, (x)emacs),
who is active or not, whether any recruits are being trained, anything
else that you care to mention.

Current herd members seem to be:
(scheme) araujo, chiiph, hkBst, pchrist
(common-lisp) chiiph, hkBst, pchrist
(emacs) fauli, ulm
(xemacs) graaff

If you're in there please respond with your little status update. If
you're not in there and you have a status update, please feel free.

So, my personal update:
Currently working on guile-2 and planning to do racket soon. After that
review scheme implementations and after that CL implementations. No
recruits in the pipeline. Activity quite low and not likely to change
much in near future.

Upstream updates are glacial, blockers for progress are the move to
GPL-3 (which re-enables syncing with GNU Emacs lisp code), and manpower.
Once a new 21.5 release has been done things might start to move a bit
again.

I hardly spent any time on xemacs in Gentoo right now.

Emacs team is more or less in maintenance mode. We think that our
eclasses serve their purpose well, and the tree is in reasonable
shape.

Upstream, there is a trend that the more important packages are being
absorbed by Emacs proper. So we may have to remove some packages from
the app-emacs category, or add conditionals to deactivate them for
newer Emacs versions.

GNU Emacs 23 was released almost two years ago. Some of the main new
features in Emacs 24 will be support for bi-directional text and for
lexical binding. Both have been merged to the trunk, so hopefully
we'll see the release of Emacs 24 in less than a year from now (it
took 10 months from 22.3 to 23.1, so by extrapolation 24.1 would be
released in January 2012 ;-) ).

For the micro-emacsen, one notable development is that Zile will move
from C to Lua. We'll have to see what are the implications for us,
because app-editors/zile is on the Gentoo minimal install CD.

Ulrich

Hi,

Marijn <hkBst@gentoo.org>:

ulm said everything that is to tell about GNU Emacs. Personally I am
out of the picture most of the time, but I stick around for Gentoo
stuff.

Sorry, I meant to send this to all gentoo-lisp, but by mistake have sent
only to one address. Repeating...

Hello *,

I'd be really grateful if somebody move cmucl-20b to the main tree. This
version compiles fricas fine. Currently, I have to pmask USE=cmucl for fricas.
Are there any obstacles?

Andrey

I will look into it. I don't promise anything, I'm a bit slow the last
months, I will still be slow until I find a sane job and fix my life.
I'm currently only working on a new sbcl ebuild for a newer sbcl
stabilization. Until the lisp team receive any help from other
developers/contributors or find time* to contribute more myself, the only
priority for me will be to support other teams which need tools of the
lisp herd (sci-mathematics is one of them, with maxima etc.). Feel free
to ask/request anything here, on this mailing list.

I know I haven't done much from when I came back from the army,
sometimes I blame myself for this**, but there were also some bad
circumstances (family issues, etc.). I will lead the lisp team if there
are no objections or nobody else decides to step up. At least, I will do the
best I can to fix/bump the primary/main scheme/cl
interpreters/ compilers. Tom (chiiph) is the only active developer in
the lisp team nowadays together with me and ulm is helping occasionally
(thank you, Ulrich). Stelian (fe[nl]ix), Cyprien (fulax) and Dmitry
(dzhus) have also helped a lot (thanks guys, your help is really
much appreciated).

Marijn, I will keep the chair warm until you're able to come back.

I am positive, things will be better in the future. Thank you all for
what you've done so far. Any help is still very appreciated.

* and hardware, my machinery is very limited these days.
** I'm really sorry for the bad status of our herds.

for me the obstacle is that cmucl doesn't support amd64. I don't think
anyone else is actively maintaining it, so please feel free to bump it
yourself and add yourself as a maintainer.

I think Panagiotis will be a fine lead. But the main problem is trying
to stay active, not so much a lack of lead. Although Pana has already
pointed me to the right direction more than once, so...

Currently, all the little work I've done is in scheme, we still have to
stablish a couple of things regarding lisp. But I'm still not as active
as I'd like, or as I once was.
