Hi,
I am looking for a good choice of laptops to use with Gentoo.
I would like to use my pre-titanium firewire powerbook 500mhz G3
(pezzo) Also I have a G3 ibook (clamshell) that I would like to convert.
Does anybody have experience with these models?
Does anybody know of any laptops to avoid with Gentoo?
Thanks
Rick

As a very gross rule, I've been happy with Dell and Thinkpads, and been
unhappy with Vaio. My own experience is supported by comments from
friends and what I've read on the web.
Now that I've said this, I'm sure someone will respond with exactly the
opposite. But I'm very interested in the answers.

What is your budget?
Iam using Averatec 6240 and more than happy with it. Everything is working
like charm, all driver supported with Linux.

Thanks!
My budget is very low (under $800.) I have more time than money! I guess
I would like to know if there is any laptop that I should stay away
from.
I would really like to convert my existing laptops (mac powerbook pezzo,
and ibook clamshell) Otherwise I would look around for a used dell, IBM,
sony, or whatever.
One thing I am looking for is if the hardware on the powerbook pezzo is
supported (firewire, dvdrom drive, duel batteries, usb, airport card,
additional display, modem, networking and sound)
I am very interested in using my powerbook for editing video/audio.
Right now I have MacOS 9. with Final Cut Pro.
I have not upgraded to OSX because I would have to update my Final Cut
Pro and adobe stuff too. I would rather set up some kind of "video for
linux" solution instead. All my desktops in my office are Gentoo, so I
would like to be consistent with my laptop.
Thanks again!

If you don't want to risk your OS 9 software until you are sure it will
work with linux, you can use a live CD. If the live cd doesn't support
everything you need, you can modify and create your own custom live cd.

If I were you, I'd stay away from Dell. They like to use hardware from SiS,
most of which is not entirely (or at all) supported.

I have a Dell Latitude D600 and it's entirely supported.

My D610 also seems well supported, although I have yet to enable (or
require) the accelerated 3D.
Network card: tg3
Wireless card: ndiswrapper
Video: ati-drivers (frglx)
Audio: Intel AC'97 (intel8x0)
Bluetooth looks like it works but I don't use it.
PCMCIA looks like it works but I don't use it. (yenta_socket)
All 3 pointers work, at the same time in X.
Had a few problems playing the one DVD I tried, but I could read all the
files on the disk fine.
Battery seems to last longer in linux than windows, when using the
conservative governor.

If there is no accelerated 3D, then it's not entirely supported, then is it?
I have that problem on my box as well, but I'm thinking of replacing the
video card soon anyways.

I said well, not entirely. (That was the other poster, talking about a
D600 which, surprisingly enough, is completely different from a D610.)
That said, the Gentoo wiki and other sources on the Internet indicate
that accelerated 3D is available on this model of laptop, with this
card.

Not sure I'd do it, but I read somewhere that the walmart computer
supports gentoo well. was it on this mailinglist? it's under $500 and
runs linspire, so it's 90% (or whatever) of the way there.

Hi,
Above all avoid Intel 8xx, 9xx graphics cards. They work as shit and you
will spend weeks for configuring it (especially glx mode). But probably
you don't have such concerns with Apple

I use Dell Latitude D410 which works fantastic. Only the graphics
chipset (intel) doesn't work in glx mode. Stable releases of Xorg
doesn't support i810 driver and you would have to install 6.8.99 masked
version. However glx mode doesn't work with or without dri snaphots
patched or not.
The funny thing is that loading any of the kernel modules related to
acpi slows down the computer (don't know how) without installing acpi
daemon nor cpufreqd just modprobing ie: speedstep-centrino does it.
(2.6.13, 2.6.14 kernels)

lo,
FWIW my advice is look at the fujitsu range, they are all well supported under
linux and run beautifully. Personally I have a p7010D and it is fully
supported with the exception of the fingerprint scanner, but I have some
hopes for that as well.

What version of X do you use and how did you make it working

Could you explain DRI vs. GLX? I set up DRI but never (had to?) mess
with GLX. Can I get more performance if I configure it somehow.

Hehehehehehe... that's funny. Maybe if it's confidential you shouldn't
have sent it to an email list. ;-) I hate automatic disclaimers.

DRI - Direct Rendering Interface is (I think) the opengl mode
try $glxgears to see performance of your video card
try "glxinfo | grep direct" to see if direct rendering is enabled
I had direct rendering enabled in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and disabled in
glxinfo
So far I haven't resolved it (probably wrong libGL library) but I've
given up
On my i915 card I get around 700-800 fps on glxgears and it should be
1500-1800 with direct rendering enabled
Have a good time with DRI

I had no problems with an Intel 915. This was on the Dell Inspiron 1200,
which is a $600 laptop and works pretty well with linux. I can't
recommend that laptop because the keyboard is *terrible*. It has a funny
lip at the bottom end that drives me crazy. All the hardware support is
fine, though.
The X versions were recent (fedora core 3 installed perfectly first
time, then ran the update systems to bring uptodate), and gentoo 2005.1
with full updates about a month back. With the gentoo system I did a
phase I, but everything was great - there's a driver, and it runs fine.
On gentoo I believe I was using framebuffer support, so no 3D. That
doesn't bother me - Grand Theft Auto doesn't run on Gentoo yet. And, on
gentoo, I was running command line only.
The one problem I had with the Inspiron 1200 was 16-bit cardbus support.
Apparently you have to figure out the memory exclude areas yourself. New
changes in the 2.6.13+ kernels are supposed to fix that --- but really,
most of my cardbus stuff is 32-bit anyway.

Set it to 16-bit instead of 24-bit. For a small loss of color depth you
will get triple or quadruple the speed.
