Hello, I am new to gentoo and have many questions.
I'll start with these:
I would like to know what mail and ftp-passive programs I should
install on my system. They should be secure with no need to get
updates due to security breaks every half year.
When I get XFree running, I also want normal ftp running like
xmftp I was used to on my suse system. What graphic/TK-program
to chose here with above mentioned security level.
After emerge xfree --fetchonly and emerge xfree and the mass
compilation even though using stage3 I still have problems getting
a working XF86Config for my 1024x600 LCD.
Also I need help with what all to get for sound.
Can anyone help me with these things?
Werner Mayer

Try running "X -configure" and see if the configuration file it
generates works. If not, then you'll have to do a search on the web for
your model laptop. A great resource for this is:
http://www.linux-laptop.net/ . They might have something about sound
for your machine as well. Generically for Gentoo you need to
install alsa-utils and then run the alsamixer to adjust sound levels and
unmute everything. See the Gentoo guides for mor information on
getting it to save and restore these volume levels.)
Good luck.

First a few general notes: you should use uclibc (uclibc-stages) for
such an old computer and binary packages built in an uclibc chroot
from a faster computer.
For X I would suggest you to use the smaller kdrive instead of xorg-x11.
And finally ftp-program .. Best is probbably to use something like
ftpfs to mount the remote ftp dir. If you use linux on the remote PC
the best option probably is to use sshfs-fuse instead of ftp.

alsa-lib and enable the correct alsa sound driver in the kernel.

I'm a sucker for good console apps, especially on low power machines
like that. For that, i'd suggest these:
mail - mutt + msmtp (for a MTA). mutt does IMAPS, and msmtp can do SMTP
AUTH with SSL, etc, etc.
ftp - ncftp (one of the nicer console FTP programs out there).
