Hello all,
I am in the near future looking to get a new laptop. I am wanting to
get a laptop that has complete linux support as much as possible, ie
even the email buttons etc. And one that has nvidia not ati would be
wonderful. Anyway, the graphics aren't as important... anyone with any
amd64 laptops please reply and let me know how things are going....

Acer Ferrari 4000 series.
Works great for me.

Except infrared and multi-card reader everything works great.

So wireless works out of the box? No ndiswrapper? And everything except
irda and the multi-card reader work just fine? Awesome. Does it
sport ATI or NVIDIA?

OK , I have an Asus Z81K, which is the barebones version of the A2000K.

AMD64 support works, by and large, well in Linux. When you're only doing stuff
that works, it's a pleasure.

Don't pan NDisWrapper too much, with a 64-bit Windows driver, I've had minimal
problems with it. Performance actually seems to be better than my wife's IBM
T42p, using the 32-bit Windows driver.

But,

* You are critically dependent on the quality and standards conformance of the
BIOS, especially in areas like APIC and frequency control (I still don't have
freq control working, after a year). The Asus is very bad in this respect

* I would strongly suggest you only get a Turion-based system. My system
(processor is a Mobile 3700+) is inclined to overheat in summer, if I'm
re-emerging gcc or something else particularly large, although removing "-j2"
from the flags in make.conf improved that somewhat.

* I have ATI graphics (mobility 9700) and it's a pain. The only way I've ever
been able to get a stable X display without artifacts, snow and noise is to
use the binary ATI drivers, which usually lag kernel development, and do not
install nicely or easily (although Gentoo seems to be making a better fist
of it than Fedora or Kubuntu).

* You will have general problems with stuff that isn't ported yet. Either
because the developers can't get their heads around playing nicely with data
types, and not assuming things (particularly pointers) are 32 bits, or don't
use a recent version of autoconf that handles --enable-suffix (so things go
in lib64), or in the case of propietary, binary only things, because they
haven't got round to doing (or haven't be able to, or won't, do) a 64-bit
port. Flash, and multimedia codecs are probably the biggest gotchas here (and
don't flame me about WDNNS Flash! Like it or lump it, swf is a part of the
web landscape, and sometimes can't be ignored)

* PCMCIA was unstable for a long while. I haven't tried it lately, but expect
it has improved in recent kernels. Ditto for firewire (but at least that
worked). USB has worked very well.

* Be prepared to build your own kernel. Be prepared to live inside testing
(enable ~amd64 in your use flags, and sometimes even ~x86 for certain
packages). Even today, running AMD64 is being on the bleeding edge. As a
consolation, most bugs are fixed quickly, at least into testing.

* I've been running Gentoo about a month, after nearly a year with the machine
running Fedora (Core 2 and 3) and a couple of weeks with Kubuntu
(unresolvable display problems forced me off that). I seem to be rebuilding
or adding some packages every day, but it's kinda more fun than running yum
over and over again. And it was the lagging KDE support that drove me off
Fedora, I don't have that problem with Gentoo.

Hope this helps,

Mike

I would sugguest buing something else than turion-based notebook.
Centrino platform is very well supported. I would recommend IBM or
MaxData (german company - suse fully supported on some models, you can
buy it without windows) notebooks.

I would agree. I have an Asus M2400Ne. It's a Centrino, and everything
works right, and I do get very good battery life out of it--usually more
than four hours, sometimes even five.

I have a powerbook 12" and everything works great for me. even the AE works now ! so I have no complain at all. the laptop is really mobile , with LInux I get about 5:20 hours of battery life and it is not heavy and of course like everything apple makes looks great !
The only problem but not for long ( not for me , but maybe for others), is that if you use or need lots of apps that run only on x86 that might be a problem. :)

another laptops that work great with linux are Dell, Sony or IBM , I have had all of this and I never got into tuff trouble with their hardware.

I have a friend with the D510 and it works. Don't generalize. I would
suggest anyone looking at a laptop to find someone with the specific
model and find out whether stuff works.

Centrino/Pentium-M rocks :-)

Most would be internal though.

Not really an issue with the laptop itself. I've got an MX310 (clearly
not as awesome, as 310 < 1000) and it works, though it doesn't have
wireless or anything.

> internal modem doesn't work.

Most don't. Mine works just enough to dial up; unfortunately all the
cool voice modem features don't work, so I can't turn my laptop into a
PBX.

Noooooooooo! There's always another way, it's not worth it! Use VMware
or something, but pleeeease! We need all the Linux geeks we can get!
:-)

I am using an IBM laptop now (at an internship). It's not running
Linux, but FWIW it's almost indestructible, and I hear that the
fingerprint scanner and TPM chip both work with Linux. (It's so nice to
have a built-in crypto processor that the *user* controls!)

I know someone who has a Gateway working under Linux. It was a while
ago so I don't remember the specifics.

I would look to someone that sells Linux laptops. LinuxCertified has an
AMD64 laptop IIRC.

I would also consider that the newest Pentium M chips (the Yonah ones,
now renamed Intel Core Duo) are dual-core, and that they are quite fast.
Someone tested them against an AMD64 and they were only a little weaker,
and in fact better at some tests.

I know you said you're not interested in chipsets, but just so you know,
graphics performance has about tripled between the Intel 855GM (the
lowest end graphics they have right now--it comes with Dothan Centrinos)
and the Intel 945GM (the highest end chipset one--it comes with Yonahs).
Personally I don't play enough games to make a discrete graphics card
worth the money, so I'm happy to hear this.

<snip>

(All those signatures--augh!)

Don't buy Dell with Intel integrated graphics cards. I have Latitude
D410 with no direct rendering (X.org 7.0 supports it but I can't install
it). Kernel modules for energy saving slow down processor even if no
deamon is installed (pure modprobe speedstep-centrino), external DVD
recorder (USB) doesn't work with K3b on non root acount, can't get to
work MX1000, internal modem doesn't work. Yet I struggle with it with
suicidal thoughts that I might migrate to Windows

Centrino does work but in a strange way
I use cpufreqd daemon and speedsteing works well in automatic mode as
well as in manual frequency changing. There is something wrong with
kernel modules itself that if I modprobe it even those not related with
speedsteppnig ie. freq_table it starts to give a hardly hearable high
frequency sound and slows system around 30-40 % down. Frequency remains
unchanged.

I had D510 and it uses Intel 855 GME chipset, D410 has Intel 915. But in
both situations you have to install either unstable 6.8.99 or modula
7.0. I use 6.8.99 and spent weeks on getting it to work (almost
succeded) but I got tired and don't have 3d mode

Sorry , I should have gave a little more detail. On my model (the
M300CRV) the video BIOS is broken.
1024x768 is listed in the V_BIOS but X6.X will not see this
resolution. It only sees 800x600 and 640x480.
The video memory is 32MB so that is not an issue. I called Gateway many
times to ask if they could issue
a new BIOS to fix the problem and all I had to an answer is "we do
support Linux , it works properly in Windows"

They would not even tell me if there was an older version or a beta that
I could even try.

If anyone one has any ideas on how to get 1024x768 (no mode by this
name) I would be very thankful

mark

Things I tried: 855resolution - set all entries to 1024x768
                      @50 different modelines
                      framebuffer stuff
VESA - does not list 1024x768
