I'd use a cradbus-usb2 to connect with an external
usb2 hard-disk, but kernel seem to was not able to handle this
device.
My laptop-box:
Linux ulisse 2.4.26-gentoo-r9 i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Do you have the necessary support for usb and scsi emulation in the
kernel? What does dmesg tell you when you plug in the usb disk?
