[gentoo-laptop] Sound on a Compaq

[Random]

After reading about 5 howtos about getting to work the sound on my evo
n115, I write to you people because I don't know what to do anymore.

When I still used mandrake (9.0) the sound worked fine (didn't had to do
anything). 

Any ideas?

1. are you using genkernel?
2. if not, did you build ALSA into your kernel?
	If you did, look at the ALSA troubleshooting guide

No, I didn't use genkernel, and yes, I did build ALSA into my kernel...

I don't know if I can be of any help. But the only problem that I had on
my HP-Compaq nx9005 was that the volume was muted ;) Check it out, maybe
that's your problem ;)

I too have ALSA built into my kernel and for some reason the alsamixer
settings don't stick... so at every boot I have to run alsamixer
[command prompt] and raise the volumes to desired levels... I assume
your might be a similar case, as long as your ALSA configuration
doesn't show any errors of any sort.

I don't have any problems with my soundcard ;) Just at the first boot I
had to raise the volume levels. To store them (so you won't have to
raise them all the time) use:
$ alsactl store

I had to add an init.d script to the default run state to save and
restore mixer settings.

rc-update add alsasound default

(I think that's right, I'm no where near my machine at the moment.)

Well in my case neither alsactl works, and I already have alsasound in
the default runlevel. It's a bit of a nuisance to put the levels back
up every time I boot [especially on a laptop that happens often
enough] but I have other more pressing issues for now... if this
discussion leads to a solution for me as well than... great!
