I have obtained SVN commit access to upstream, but I don't immediately
see what needs to get fixed from the bug in

I'll take it for a spin on my amd64 box, and if I can reproduce the
problem, I can hopefully fix it quite easily. If anybody cares to offer
suggestions, I can probably get done faster.

I am also working with upstream to fix their horrible release process,
and make the development more open, but that seems to take a lot of time.

It's the same problem that haunted jjtraveler. I tried the same fix but
autotools didn't like me. I would start with taking a look at:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=168466

I was going to eventually remove the dependent libraries to our overlay
unless someone was interested so I guess I won't be doing that then :)
