It's the same problem that haunted jjtraveler. I tried the same fix but
autotools didn't like me. I would start with taking a look at:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=168466

I was going to eventually remove the dependent libraries to our overlay
unless someone was interested so I guess I won't be doing that then :)
