Hi Guys
I know we have just moved to a new java system, I just wondered when the
first release of jdk 6.0 would be available for gentoo users?

Sun hasn't even released it yet, so...

The last release date I heard was sometime in Decemeber. We will be
making it available shortly after they do a DLJ release (under the
license that lets us mirror the files). The DLJ release shouldn't lag
beyond their normal release, but 1.5.0.09 has been out for a few weeks,
with no sign of a DLJ release.

Much thanks and appreciation to the Gentoo java Team for their work on 1.5.
I am in no rush to see 1.6, but as a developer I am just curious to
know how you feel about the design and implementation decisions you
made for 1.5. Do you feel it will facilitate the release of 1.6
quicker and easier for your guys or do you expect a smaller but
similar amount of work to do before it can be released for Gentoo
users?

The idea from what I understand is that the 1.6 release will be a lot
easier.

It's going to be trivial to support 1.6. One of the main strategies of
the new system has been that it will switch VMs at build time
appropriately. So, if there is a package which doesn't build against
1.6, it will build with 1.5 or whatever instead.
We've been testing with 1.6 betas for several months now, so most
packages that break with it have been already updated to use 1.5
instead. Of course, at some point, we will want to get the packages
properly patched so they compile cleanly against 1.6, but the new system
gives us breathing room to do this at our leisure.
