I am at JavaOne this week and this morning at the main keynote Sun announced
their new license for Linux distributions:
https://jdk-distros.dev.java.net
Debian and Ubuntu seem to be moving forward with the new license. What are the
gentoo-java group's thoughts on it?
Thanks,
Ted

Is there going to be a port to ppc?

According to this article on CNet, the Gentoo distro will be moving
forward with it as well:
http://news.com.com/Sun+promises+to+open-source+Java/2100-7344_3-6072760.html?tag=nefd.lede
(NOTE: See the bottom of the article for these particular details...
the rest pertains to the announcement of soon-to-be-coming Open Sourced
Java!)

My understanding is that they just released a port for the PowerPC but it is
being targeted towards embedded developers:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/embedded
Hope this helps,

I didn't see anything from Gentoo. If this is so, I'm disturbed that
they didn't release something to mailing list beforehand (assuming I
didn't miss anything).
Anyone suspect this is a response to Harmony and/or Google?

We were contacted by Sun about a month ago, and they informed us of the
upcoming license change, and sent us a copy for us to evaluate. We read
it, and found that it allows us to mirror, i.e. redistribute the Sun
JDK/JRE.
Therefore, I whipped up an ebuild last week, and placed it our
experimental overlay this weekend, but on request from Sun, we didn't
pre-announce this, so as to not steal their thunder.
For those who have lurked on our IRC channel, you may have had reason to
believe that something was coming.
As you guys know, we're still in a package freeze due to 1.5 migration.
Even so, I suspect that we'll be making an exception and updating at
least the 1.5 JRE in the Portage tree relatively soon, perhaps also the JDK.

I don't see why you feel so disturbed. Sun invited us early, but
reserved the right to announce this themselves first. I don't see why
that would upset you (or anybody else, for that matter).
You may argue that we should have announced it to the mailing list
simultaneously with the JavaOne announcement, but I wasn't online for
the last few days, and now, the cat is well out of the bag.
Furthermore, we engaged the Gentoo PR team well in advance, so due
process was followed on the part of the Java Team, imho.
Cheers,

In case anbody wonders: The current distribution license, DLJ-1.1, only
gives us the right redistribute the pre-built binaries from Sun. On
Linux, only amd64 and x86 are supported.
Hopefully, a ppc port will materialize. If nothing else, once Sun slaps
on an OSI-approved license, I'm sure the community will make available a
proper PPC port relatively quickly.
Chers,
