What does 'GENTOO_VM=ibm-jdk-bin-1.5 java-config-2 --jdk-home' tell you?

Also, could you try with the most recent version, 3.2_rc3 ?

That can't be good. Is there anyone else with PPC hardware that can
test/verify this?
