Well, I have now managed to compile and install eclipse-sdk-3.2_rc5 from
geki's gcj-overlay. The native compiled version seems to be running much
faster and using less memory.
All that is aside from the fact that eclipse was not running at all with
ibm-jdk-bin as JVM.
The ebuild required resetting -java5home to "/opt/ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.0/", for
some reason the setting was "/usr/share/classpath/". I have no idea why.
Also there was a setting under GECKO_SDK where one of the include directories
was "JAVA_HOME/include/linux". Does anyone have such a directory?

I told you why I am using GNU Classpath generics branch for Java5 code.
I do not want to depend on virtual/jdk-1.5 there.
This may change in future.

Thank you, I did not understand before. I simply noticed that there was no
such directory. I see now that I had gnu-classpath installed after
gnu-classpath-generics and that classpath blocks generics on my system. That
is perhaps why there was no /usr/share/classpath/ directory on my system.
