Hi,

I intend to clean up the mess that caucho-services, burlap and hessian have
become. Hessian upstream jar has been splitted into three separate packages -
bite me why, also current versions in the tree are very, very old. I intent to
create two ebuilds:

  * hessian-3.0.20 - new, merged hessian protocol package, will provide 3 jars
  * hessian-3.1.6 - like above

(slots 3.0 and 3.1)

If you need one jar from hessian then you're doing something wrong anyway.

If there are no objections I'll go forward with the change, for start
package.mask'ed - to have time to fix mx4j and mx4j-tools.

Nice work. Scott's work on Resin is impressive. It has certainly been
the JSP runner of our choice for over 6 years and has served us well in
production. I'm pleased to see someone taking care of related ebuilds.

As I'm the maintainer of www-servers/resin I'd like to clean up also other
Caucho related ebuilds.

As there were no objections I'll go with this today.

Probably to have cleaner dependencies up the tree. I think there used to
be other stuff besides mx4j needing them.

My quick grep of the tree didn't reveal other ebuilds, but I'll double-check
before unmasking hessian.

This is done:

  * new hessian: hessian-3.0.20 and hessian-3.1.6
  * version bump of mx4j* to version 3.0.2

New versions of hessian require >=JDK 1.5, so I had to raise the lowest allowed
JDK version for mx4j from 1.4 to 1.5.

Any idea how to test what packages would be affected by unmasking of new mx4j?

Build everything in dev-java ? It would also catch all compile errors, etc
independent from mx4j - which is not relevant to this case.

There should be no build errors while compiling everything in dev-java
at least in stable as the result of recent JDK stabling bugs for example.

Could you recommend any tool? Except paludis/pkgcore (I don't have any feeling
towards them, I just don't need another package manager).

That's great :) I'll try to setup a build root for this test.

They work just fine as a read only tool while using emerge to do the
actual package handling. You could try the jeeves IRC bot.

Ok, there's a problem with mx4j-*-3.0.2:

1. commons-modeler: has >=jdk-1.4 - would need to be changed to 1.5
2. groovy: has || ( =jdk-1.5 =jdk-1.4 )
3. proxool: has >=jdk-1.4
4. tomcat: needs mx4j when java5 USE flag is disabled, it uses then JDK 1.4 and
mx4j-core is compiled with 1.5 (due to hessian needing 1.5)

Maybe it's time to deprecate 1.4 and reccomend >=1.5 where it's possible?

I propose to deprecate java5 USE flag and default to >=1.5 - 1.4 is long time
dead. What that means? Everywhere where there's a >=jdk-1.{2,3,4} it should be
changed to >=jdk-1.5, if there's a strict dependency on 1.4 there's not much we
can do, beside leaving the offending package to bit rot. Following packages
could be affected (the list may contain errors):

No problems here. Although there was an issue with Tomcat 5.5 having war
deployment or redeployment issues when compiled as 1.5. Something to do
with differences in Catalina.jar. But it wasn't really wide spread, nor
was a bug ever filed on it. So that could become an issue if 1.4 is
removed. Worse case we have to find problem or take some other action.

Also might be some fun with jdbc-jaybird. But otherwise I have no
problems, and your welcome to touch any package I maintain as needed in
the process. Just try for little to no borkage. If you sprinkle while
you tinkle, please be neat and wipe the seat :)

Thanks for the effort, and initiative.
