Hi everyone

Has any of you actually succeded in installing Gentoo using the
experimental LiveCD with the recently born graphical installer? If the
answer is yes (i sure hope so) what options did you use?

I've been trying for a while, still no success.

Respectfully

Rafael

I have done several installations. On all of them, I used dynamic
stage3 + GRP + livecd-kernel on x86.

Are you doing this on AMD64?

How about instead of asking us what we did that worked, you tell us what
did not work for you, since there are tons of people getting it working
successfully.

Try fixing your hardware. When a filesystem suddenly goes read-only, that's
almost a sure sign of a failing drive.

You are probably right.

I have an Athlon XP 2000 and a VIA KT4AV Mother
i tried the installed choosing dynamic stage 3, and grp packages
it always crashes when it gets to merging the aditional packages,
unless an input/output error due to a "read only filesystem" pops up
first

after the input/output error i always have to reboot since the system
stops responding

i tried both installers found on the LiveCD

thanks in advance

I would try using the latest installer if you aren't already..

Which packages?

Well, depending on the packages, it might not be pulling from GRP.

I'd have to agree with Andrew, it does sound like a hardware issue,
especially if it is happening with both installer front-ends.

Have you verified that your hard drive is not going bad?

Also, try updating the installer to CVS. Instructions are in the FAQ
(linked on the desktop).

First of all thanks for the feedback everyone.

I guess you are all right to suspect a hardware problem but i am using
extensively tested equipment (or at least i been told so). Anyway,
yesterday i succeded, the only change i made was choosing the liveCD
kernel instead of the gentoo sources, and so far, everything is
working, does it makes sense to you?

That would take a little bit of stress off the disks since it doesn't have to
compile a kernel, but I'm still going to blame your hardware. The installer
doesn't do anything that would make your filesystems suddenly turn read-only.
Also, random failures (not reproducible) are almost always hardware related.

I've done probably 80+ installs with various versions of the installer using the
same LiveCD on a few different boxes, and I have never had the problems you are
describing.

Well then, its a hardware failure allright, i will now proceed to
cross my fingers and hope the promblem dissapeared magicaly, if it
fails again ill go shopping i guess.

Thanks for your help!
