The previous gcc-3.4 based toolchain also supported SSP and PIE, though
the SSP implementation was significantly different. gcc 4.x only went
"stable" on hardened profiles recently. (The hardened SELinux profile
is still using gcc-3.4.6, in fact, though I'm hoping that's just an
oversight.)
