Hello everyone,

I'd like to make the list aware that there is a new release of Tin Hat
out.  For those unfamiliar, Tin Hat is a fully featured Linux desktop
based on Hardened Gentoo which runs purely in RAM.  It aims to be very
secure, stable, and fast.  Thanks to the dedicated Gentoo developers,
our group continues to put together a tightly knit hardened destkop
environment.

This release has some major feature enhancements.  Primarly, one can
now "save" a running Tin Hat system to an ISO image or pen drive, thus
one can implement and retain customizations to the OS.  An added
benefit is that now Tin Hat releases are no longer built from VMware
templates but from prestine running Tin Hat systems, all purely in
RAM.  Saving a running system and building a new release is in essence
the same process.  The bash scripts are the key, and one can use them
to "ramify" any Linux system as we have already done to other
customized Gentoo systems which we use for teaching.

As a side note to a recent discussion on the list, I hope that Tin Hat
furthers the cause of hardening on a desktop.  The question of whether
the enormous effort is worth it might be mitigated by the fact that
much of the work has already been done in a prebuild reference system.
