GWN seeking help
----------------

The GWN staff is seeking writers to help us collect stories from the Gentoo
community and also from outside sources. There is a current need for people
to write summaries of topics from the various Gentoo mailing lists, the
forums, and the planet aggregator. These summaries should be between about
50 and 250 words and should give the general idea of the thread or post.
Besides the community summaries, the GWN staff is seeking articles about
local events, Gentoo being mentioned in other on-line and print media, and
also tips and tricks that can be passed on to other Gentoo users.

If you are interested in becoming a regular writer for the GWN, or just want
to give a one time contribution, contact the GWN staff at
gwn-feedback@gentoo.org.

Install locations for doc packages

Gentoo developer Ryan Hill asks the correct way in which to manage the
installation of documentation with packages, as there is an inconsistency as
to how it is currently treated within the tree. The problem being that if
they are installed according the the package version, then bookmarks will be
broken on a version bump. Zac Medico, a portage developer, replies by saying
that since portage 2.1.2 a new variable, DOC_SYMLINKS_DIR, is designed to
solve this problem.

IT News Online (19 Feb 2007)
----------------------------

VIA Technologies Inc. announced that Ainkaboot, a London-based company
designing cluster servers for high performance computing (HPC) and high
availability computing, is shipping the first ultra compact Octimod
MPC7-1500 cluster modules powered by VIA EPIA EN15000 mainboards.

KlustOS, the Ainkaboot dedicated clustering operating system, provides the
backbone of the Octimod, with a host of clustering utilities, management
software and parallel processing environments. Based on Gentoo Linux,
KlustOS consists almost exclusively of open source software and is able to
take advantage of hardware features such as VIA PadLock Security Engine
tools.

PRWeb (19 Feb 2007)
-------------------

BitLeap's LeapServ® backup and recovery network appliances and remote backup
service are Linux-based and rely on a range of open source applications.

The Gentoo Linux distribution lies at the heart of the LeapServ, remotely
managing thousands of servers on remote networks, while modified RDBMS's
MySQL and PostgreSQL are used for storing and retrieving hundreds of
millions of records of customer's data. See BitLeap's open source page for
more details on how BitLeap integrates open source software in development.

6. Gentoo package moves
=======================

This section lists packages that have either been moved or added to the tree
and packages that have had their "last rites" announcement given to be
removed in the future. The package removals come from many locations,
including the Treecleaners[3] and various developers. Most packages which
are listed under the Last Rites section are in need of some love and care
and can remain in the tree if proper maintainership is established.
