This has probably been discussed before: Im looking for hardware
recommendations. Im building a network appliance but I need something a
bit more powerful than what Soekris offer - maybe something like Mini-ITX
but cheap?

VIA based EPIA boards, as low as $130. I suggest one based on the CLE266 as
it is fully supported by Linux.

x86 based, the newer CPUs are considered i686 class. Clock speeds range from
400 to 1.2GHz.

For details of how to get the most out of the CLE266 based boards (mpeg2
hardware decoding), check out the Gentoo wiki. I'm currently updateing this
page, should be finished this weekend.

Why would a network appliance need mpeg2 decoding? ;-)

Set top box? Maybe not a network appliance in the strictest sense, but
definitely well within the realm of embedded.

Yeah but the point is I was specifically asking about hardware for a
network appliance - no mention of sound/video requirements!
