Is there a way of telling emerge to fetch its config from somewhere else
but /etc? a command-line parameter i have missed?

i don't want to break all of my make.conf, profile, keywords et all just
for cross-building packages.

Try rmerge. It's absolutely new, nearly untested and thus dangerous.
Create a rootfs with baselayout and then use use rmerge this way:

ROOT="/rootfs/" rmerge <packet> -options

http://arcanux.org/rmerge

Read the comments inside the script to understand what it does.

I think rmerge is not the right solution because you cannot do another
emerge in parallel. Adding environment variables to change the make.conf
and profiles path is much better IMO. (see
http://www.mail-archive.com/gentoo-portage-dev%40lists.gentoo.org/msg01119.html).

True. But rmerge is a workaround until the good(tm) solution is
available in portage. Thats's what I understood from shillealgh (the
author) in #gentoo-embedded.

I don't know. I just talked about the issue with some guys in
#gentoo-embedded who told me this. If you use irc go to #gentoo-embedded
and try to get things going. I don't have the time do do this right now.
Maybe next week.

"until the good(tm) solution is available", does that mean there is a
whishlist-bug pending? because i found none. if there really is none,
perhaps some1 should file one.
