I have recently written a custom driver for a device with such an
USB-UART.
Take a look at /usr/src/linux/drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.[ch] - the
programming interface is well documented there. There's also a
user-space library for direct communication with the FTDI chips and an
utility for programming the EEPROM [1], but neither of them support
the FT232R yet.
